The most relevant forum thread seems to be https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=213533
How I describe what's happening is that terminals and certain applications such as rofi have delayed input; When I press a key, it takes about 1 second to actually register but at that point it starts repeating. It registers on key release, but all in all it feels very slow and even causes typos. Applications such as discord and firefox do not have this issue for me.
In the thread they discuss several solutions:
1. Remove Intel and use modesetting
2. Use UXA acceleration option
3. Use a compositing manager
4. Disable framebuffer compression i915 option (the "true" bug)
What works for me:
1: Modesetting driver fixes it perfectly but it randomnly freezes X such that I can't even switch to the console. When not frozen, there is way too much screen tearing. Not sure how to fix the freezing otherwise I would probably choose this option.
2: No effect
3: Works, but causes transparency in places I don't want it, and despite making input snappy, makes the rest of my system feel just a bit slower. I really don't feel like I should be forced to use a compositor.
4: Sadly this was supposed to be the most direct fix, but this does nothing for me.
Not sure what else to try.
