log watching tool?

is there such a thing as a tool to monitor logs from various machines and flag up important events? i.e to monitor the logs on several servers and display any important events in one place, or even better email an admin when certain events happen.

Such things are available for windows servers, was just wondering if there was an open source one for linux.

Re: log watching tool?

so does "tail -f /var/log/foo.log | grep bar", but that's more specific

yeah ive been doing that, but with two servers and my pc (all run arch  8) ) its getting a bit of a pain to keep checking them all, especially since I find myself working a lot lately on other things (which involve being paid to check logs on lots of other servers, making checking my own logs even less appealing!) - I do appreciate I could write some scripts, but I thought I would see if anyone has done it for me  tongue

Thanks for the suggestions.
