I own an HP Elite 8300 SFF and until recently I used X using the VGA connector and a 1280x1024 monitor without issues. A few days ago I installed an Eizo Full HD monitor using the DisplayPort connector and every now and then X crashes when trying to wake up my system after it's gone to DPMS sleep mode, because the last write time to /var/log/Xorg.0.log is the moment I move the mouse and, after no effect, try to switch to the console using Ctrl-Alt-F3. Only after switching consoles a bit and restarting the monitor I get my screen back, but X is gone.
My Xorg.0.log looks like:

Try using the modesetting driver, the intel driver is deprecated anyway.
Offline
I will try, but why is the intel driver deprecated? Using modesetting I lose several features like hardware encoding, which makes converting video using ffmpeg terribly slow.
Offline
I retract my comment about slow encoding, apparently ffmpeg still uses libva-intel-driver and encodes at normal speed.
Offline
I'll shamelessly link the gentoo wiki for quotes, https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel#Intel_DDX but statements and incidents are all over the web and mailing lists.
The reason is (most likely) wayland, so the workload is being moved into the kernel modules.
Offline
Thanks for the link. I'll try modesetting for a week or so and if I don't get anymore crashes, I'll mark this topic solved.
Offline
It is sometimes difficult to wake up the monitor when the system fell asleep, but at least the X server doesn't crash anymore. Thanks!
