Hi,
I'm baffled at the moment, mostly because I thought this was working.
My network is 4 Arch workstations and one Windows PC. I've got smb.conf configured very simply for each, sharing the home directory on the Linux PCs, and a few things on the Windows PC.
In a nutshell, each linux PC can see itself and the Windows PC, but not each other. For example, I can
smbclient -L officeand browse the windows document directories, or whatever. Can do the same on the originating workstation, though there's obviously not much use in that.
I have SMB4K installed on these systems as well. When I browse the network, the workgroup comes up with the names of all the workstations, but none of the IP addresses except its own and the Windows PC.
To the best of my knowledge, I have not enabled any firewalls on this side of the router. Doesn't mean there not there, just that I haven't intentionally edited any of the iptables.
Does any of this make any sense to anyone?
Again, I've been able to browse and mount local drives as late as a couple of days ago, but no longer. I did do some upgrades, but didn't notice anything in this regards. I use the "testing" repositories.
Any advice you could share would be most welcome. Thx!

I checked an iptables are *not* running. So, it doesn't appear to be a firewall issue.

Hmmph. I reset the wireless router. Now it's OK. This is a Netgear router, but a little old. Do you think there might be a new one that is better choice?

If the roueter allows the connections I see no point in changing it ... if it aint broken don't fix it.
Samba can be a little triky at times, but if it is working then just enjoy ;-)

you used samba for sharing between Arch systems? i thought that was only for accessing windoze machines? i have to set up a similar system (no windows box tho) how do you go about it? thanks

Hi,
I'm obviously no expert in this. I do use it, though, all the time. I should say that I have one Windows PC that I think behaves as the arbitor of the LAN. Without this, you'll probably have to make a few more settings in your smb.conf file.
I got started using the instructions in the wikihttp://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Setting_up_Samba
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thou could (and should) use nfs for I/O between the linux boxes... not samba. Samba is a nececcity for windows boxes.

I suppose, but does NFS help to share printers? I also have a couple of shared printers. SAMBA seemed to address this and file sharing ok.

It certainly does... actually there are several ways sharing a Linux printer.
