Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

I installed Arch on my PC but when I boot I get a black screen. I can boot when I boot with the kernel parameters, "nomodeset" but then I can't boot into the GUI.

I have an AMD A10-9700 APU and a Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H motherboard.

I've tried installing drivers with the "nomodeset" parameters and then booting but I still get the same result.

If you could help then that would be appreciated.

What does this mean?

What drivers have you installed? Have you installed and enabled any graphical login managers? Please post the complete journal from a failed boot session, using a pastebin if necessary.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

I've tried installing the amdgpu and ati drivers. I don't have a graphical login manager. I've just tried startx.

Here's the journal: https://transfer.sh/cj4AW/journal

I don't have a GUI so I can't upload it to a pastebin.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

See the tip box from List_of_applications#Pastebin_clients to use a pastebin from the console.
If you are using startx the output of dmesg and the contents of Xorg.#.log which will be in either /var/log/ or ~/.local/share/xorg/ will be more appropriate.
Edit:
Also the kernel messages from a boot without the nomodeset option which you should be able to extract from the journal (see the -b and -k options)
Edit2:
Please post an Xorg.#.log that is also from a boot without the nomodeset option.  (near the top of the log will be a line starting 'Kernel command line:'  which will show if the nomodeset option was used.)

I can't get the xorg logs from a boot without the "nomodeset" option because I just get a black screen. I don't boot into a CLI so I can't even run startx without "nomodeset"

The amdgpu is failing on initialization hence the blank screen.  Does adding the boot option amdgpu.dc=0 again without nomodeset produce the same result?

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

No. I don't get a blank screen but it gets stuck on the usual start up info like partition details. That's it though and I can't do anything else.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

No nomodeset, you'll never start any display server with that.

Try https://www.archlinux.org/packages/test … _64/linux/ (use the download from mirror link)

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

You could try a sshd to connect to your black screen environment.

Journal: https://pastebin.com/scKee4nv

How would I install that kernel? Do I have to add the testing repo to pacman.conf? Wouldn't that cause issues if I do?

Sshd wouldn't be very practical for me.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

No you do not need to add the testing repositories as kernel space and userspace are separate.

wget "https://mirror.ams1.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/testing/os/x86_64/linux-4.20.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz" #download the kernel
wget "https://mirror.ams1.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/testing/os/x86_64/linux-4.20.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz.sig" #download its signature
# pacman -U linux-4.20.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz #install the package you just downloaded

Edit:
fixed url

You can use e.g. your smartphone as ssh client.

The 4.20 kernel is the best approach indeed. I would start testing with no additional drivers installed (like xf86-video-amdgpu or radeon). The amdgpu drm driver is already included in the kernel. It should be sufficient to start up xorg (KMS (kernel mode setting) with glamor 2D acceleration). Needs mesa package.

That mirror doesn't work. I keep getting a 404.

Take the period off the end of the first url. It should be:

wget "https://mirror.ams1.nl.leaseweb.net/archlinux/testing/os/x86_64/linux-4.20.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz"

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

I tried that. It turns out that I used a hyphen instead of an underscore.

The new kernel doesn't work either. I've tried it with all the parameters too.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

Switching to 4.20 no longer produces (scratch(0xC040)=0xCAFEDEAD) but it is failing to find firmware unfortunately it does not list the files its failing to find.

Please try 4.20 with the options amdgpu.dc=1 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0
Are you adding the quotes that appear in the options string?  (I do not know if it makes a difference)

Booting with the new parameters doesn't work. I added in the quotes. I didn't add them this time though.

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

There is a BIOS update for your board (F23->F24). Worth a try i guess.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA … rt-dl-bios

Make sure that's your board/bios indeed beforehand. If you have an OEM PC this might not be the right source.

My only other suggestion would be iommu=soft

Re: Arch stays at black screen when I boot.

Iommu=soft doesn't work.

I updated my bios but now it keeps asking me to reset my fTPM or keep it. It always boots into this. If I press N for no then it asks me for a boot device. I think it may have wiped arch somehow so now I need to install it again.
