Well it's been only a week and I broke my first install of Arch.
installed in a virtual machine. was running fine until i decided to pacman -Syu. ended up not being able to boot back in.
after some research... file vmlinuz-linux returned "empty". so i reinstalled linux and updated grub.
able to boot back in but now it takes about 2 minutes for my DM to appear and then my DE just keeps crashing. i can get to a tty no problem.
any advice on how to go about fixing this?
thanks

update: i decided to try downgrading the kernel to 4.20.13. but still same issue

Let's clarify. You can boot to a display manager, although it takes longer than expected, and then once you log in, your desktop environment crashes. Are you returned to the display manager at that point?
What display manager are you using?
What desktop environment are you using?
Please reboot and replicate the issue, then post the full output from these commands:
journalctl -b
systemd-analyze critical-chain
systemd-analyze blame
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
cat /var/log/pacman.logIf you are stuck in the CLI, you can send the output of a command to a paste service, then note down the URL it gives you back and post here.
Example:
journalctl -b | curl -F c=@- https://ptpb.pw/Offline
Nobody suggested to spoon-feed you. The link Trilby gave you said to post actual data.
dmartins now spoon-fed you on which those might be…

[2019-03-06 14:02] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S --force linux'2019-03-06 15:19] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman -S --force lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter cinnamon'
Your pacman log is a mess of partial updates and those force invocations are emblematic of someone who is not reading the wiki but relying on third party guides.
No wonder your system is borked.

Is http://archman.org/ the archlinux distribution you installed?

i dont know what this link is to. i tried downgrading my kernel from the new 5.0 to the one i had previously. and yes, according to what i understood after reading the wiki on how to downgrade.

This looks pretty broken. Reinstalling may be the easiest solution, but if you want to try to fix it, review you journalctl log for messages from ldconfig like:
Mar 10 00:27:26 archman ldconfig[376]: /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libvpx.so.6.0 is empty, not checked. You have many of these errors and it isn't normal. Some core libraries are apparently empty or missing. You could use pacman to find the owner of each library, and reinstall that package:
# pacman -Syu (potentially reboot to put new kernel / libs to use)
# pacman -Fy
# pacman -Fs libvpx.so.6.0
extra/libvpx 1.8.0-1
usr/lib/libvpx.so.6.0
# pacman -S libvpxRepeat pacman -Fs and pacman -S for each empty library file
You might also try pacman -Qkk and review the output for warnings about missing files.
Some more general suggestions:
Never use pacman -Sy <package>. Use pacman -S <package>. If pacman gives you a 404 error from the server, it is time to update your system. Do pacman -Syu, then try to install the package you wanted again. Read this.
Don't use yay. If you need packages from the AUR, learn to use https://aur.archlinux.org and makepkg well, before using an AUR helper.

i went through these steps but in the end I couldn't get the packages installed. Just kept telling me the files already existed in the filesystem
pacman -Syu (potentially reboot to put new kernel / libs to use)
# pacman -Fy
# pacman -Fs libvpx.so.6.0
extra/libvpx 1.8.0-1
usr/lib/libvpx.so.6.0
# pacman -S libvpxSo I took your advice and reinstalled. and will follow the system maintenance guidelines better this time.
thanks for the help dmartins
