Installing pulseaudio without using it [Solved]

This has been a long standing problem for me. Alsa works great for me. No problem using multiple sources. I use GQRX and it requires pulseaudio. It needs the pulseaudio services to work so apulse is not a solution here. If I install pulseaudio on it own and not use it, it limits me to one alsa audio source. I don't want to use pulseaudio as the pulseaudio-alsa package sets. Ive read the archwiki on alsa and pulseaudio. Is this possible?

Re: Installing pulseaudio without using it [Solved]

apulse is what you should be using if you want to provide fake pulseaudio to an application.

Also incidentally, the software you are talking about happens to include a secondary binary called gqrx-alsa , I'd assume this would transparently solve your issue.

If you still think you still need it, this probably comes closest to what you want: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … are_device

Re: Installing pulseaudio without using it [Solved]

Thanks. As I said above apulse doesn't work here. I was using the git version that doesnt contain the alsa  binary but have switched to the arch repository version and your right it does have a separate alsa binary. Just tested and works so Thanks Again.

Re: Installing pulseaudio without using it [Solved]

Even if you were using a git build it would just be a matter of configuring it properly, there are three audio backends and only one of them is pulseaudio.

If you feel this is solved, please mark it as such by adding [SOLVED] to the title by editing your first post: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post

Also not to sound like an ass, but apulse doesn't work is not an error message, there's no reason why it shouldn't work on your system, and it would be the cleanest solution to this problem if your stated goal is to avoid using pulseaudio but a specific application forcing your hand.

Re: Installing pulseaudio without using it [Solved]

The link you provided I believe is the solution I was asking for but you found me a better one.
I didn't think to check for build options, I know I should have. Alsa is not build by default upsteam, the arch package does build it by default. That was my confusion.
You are correct again I should have posted the error message.

[jacob@WhiteRapid ~]$ apulse gqrx
**
GLib:ERROR:../glib/glib/ghash.c:377:g_hash_table_lookup_node: assertion failed: (!g_atomic_ref_count_compare (&hash_table->ref_count, 0))
Aborted (core dumped)

Apluse has worked for me with other programs it just did not work in this case. I had not considered it a viable option although it may have been and so was not looking to troubleshoot it. I will be more precise and verbose with any future problems I have.
