[Solved] Double router DMZ

not an actual Arch issue, except that the box in the DMZ is my Arch server.

I got a secondary router because the wifi on the cheap one that came with my ISP is terrible.

using the old router, my server (wired) I assigned as the DMZ so that I can SSH into it from the outside world (and all other ports are default deny).

using the new router, I placed the new router in the DMZ of the old router (the modem/router combo), and the server (wired) as the DMZ of the new router. when I try to connect from outside I get timeouts. the old router won't let me add IPs on the new router as the DMZ (I tried). is my only option to connect the server to the old router instead? have I not thought of something?

appreciate any feedback.

Why get a second router instead of just an access point? Having 2 routers just leads to the kind of issues you are experiencing.

I have somewhat similar setup here; I don't trust my ISPs router and my Firewall is behind it as DMZ. The differences, I use port forwarding, while he seems to be attempting DMZ.

EDIT: While my ISP says I can use whatever router I like, I never get DHCP answer but only with the ISP router.

the DMZ on the old router is the IP address (on the old router) of the new router, because it won't let me add IPs in the DHCP range of the new router as the DMZ

Sorry, I have trouble visualizing what this means, I leave that for someone else.

Wireshark whether packages make it down to your server and if where the answer is sent.
Can you log traffic on either of the routers?

And to support Slithery's point: you *do* need that routing cascade?

this was the question I should have asked to begin with. the answer was to put the second router into bridged mode on the first router (after a quick call to my ISP to get a second IP to let me do it).

I've never had such a setup before, so I wasn't really sure of the best way to go about doing it. I just know that the wifi on my ISP's router is terrible (and I like the WRT interface of the new shiny toy router).

all is well now.
