limit network bandwidth of a running process?

Hi folks,

Can anybody recommend a way of limiting the network usage / bandwidth of a running process?  I have a remote backup task which, which runs over SSH, that I would like to limit.  I do not want to limit the bandwidth of the whole machine though, only the backup process.  Ideally I'm looking for a way to limit a process which is already running, not a way to start the process with limited bandwidth.

I've come across tc (from iproute2) .... but the learning curve seems steep!  If somebody can help me make sense of that then great, otherwise maybe there is another simpler tool out there?

Thanks - JB

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan
