cannot run smartctl on drive

I am trying to run a smart test on my suspected failed drive. I ran:

sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda

but that returns the error:

=== START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION ===
Sending command: "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode".
Command "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode" failed: scsi error badly formed scsi parameters

Since the drive is sata, not scsi, I tried to add the extra "device" parameter:

sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda --device=ata

but this returns the error:

=== START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION ===
Sending command: "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode".
Command "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in off-line mode" failed: Input/output error

what should I do?

Re: cannot run smartctl on drive

The device is smart-capable

smartctl -a /dev/sda

gives

Some data certainly makes no sense, secure all data you can obtain. It seems the controller chip took a hit.

yes

Is that why smartctl doesn't work? How do I secure data if I can't boot from it?

The drive came from a new dell precision, but it definitely has been powered on for more than 3 hours...
where are you seeing these numbers?

Re: cannot run smartctl on drive

Try to mount the precious partition/s (your private data, the stuff where there's only one copy if you don't have a backup) from any live system and copy the data to another drive.

Uptime etc. are in your smartctl -a output. It's impossible to say (for us) what happened to the disk, but I've seen this kind of behavior from overheated disks.
What we can say is that a disk showing this behavior is no more trustworthy.

Just to be sure (because the dmesg doesn't suggest otherwise): this is attached directly to an ATA controller (w/ a sata cable) and there's no adapter? (Because those tend to screw "irrelevant" ATA commands like the SMART stuff)

Re: cannot run smartctl on drive

I'm having a very similar problem with a Dell XPS 13 9350:

smartctl -a /dev/sda

gives

What we can say is that a disk showing this behavior is no more trustworthy.

Is there any hope for restoring this drive? Or is a full replacement necessary. (I have everything backed up already.) Thanks for your help and advice.

Re: cannot run smartctl on drive

There's nothig interesting or disk IO related in that dmesg snippet at all, please don't post random excerpts.
There're no errors logged in the smartctl output and the last (short) test ran w/o errors ~100h ago.
The reallocated sector count is scary, but the numbers are often all over the place w/ SSDs anyway.

Please open a new thread, describe your actual error symptoms, post a complete dmesg. If you believe this is a drive issue, run a full SMART test and post the updated status report.
