Recent kernels causing problems on laptop

Previous related post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=248825

Ever since 5.2.11 (5.2.10 worked normally) I have been experiencing issues on kernels 5.2.11-5.2.14 things have crashed/frozen on launch (steam, lutris or a few other programs when certain actions are done) and powering off/rebooting just simply don’t work - the system stays on. Now it has got a lot worse, on 5.3 it crashes when trying to launch i3 from sddm.

I have already tried using the kernel magic sysreq keys but even they don’t fix the problem (I have to hold down the power button).

Hardware info:
HP Pavillion 15-cx0598na:
- Intel Core i5-8300H (UHD Graphics 630)
- noVideo GTX 1050Ti mobile - bumblebee configured, but not being used at time of crash

Re: Recent kernels causing problems on laptop

Bisect the kernel, the behavior seems quite random and deep (the kernel doesn't respond to sysreq) so some critical HW doesn't respond too well to some ioctl.
Could be iommu, try passing "iommu=soft" to the kernel (but that's a completely uninformed random guess)

And edit your thread title to remove the hysteric all caps, and instead describe the issue: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post

Re: Recent kernels causing problems on laptop

I have seen your previous thread. Do you have xf86-video-intel package installed? If yes, than try to uninstall it, and see if it helps.

Re: Recent kernels causing problems on laptop

Ok, the problem that affected 5.2.11-5.2.14 seems to have gone away (library update?). I am currently in the middle of bisecting 5.3 for the problem where I3 doesn't start and will update you when I have finished.
