[SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

Hey guys, I heard on IRC that there are some known issues between atheros network interface cards and the linux kernel. For example, my system was working fine up until the last or second last (maybe third last) linux kernel releases. Therefore at the moment I am using the lts kernel and it is working again, but could somebody please provide me with some more information regarding this? When it wasn't working, my kernel would panic as soon as I established a network connection...

Thank you.

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

Please be specific towards actual hardware on your own system, version numbers, and actual error messages you are receiving, instead of vague wonderings.

Case in point, I do have a QCA6174 and have not had any issues with it in recent times. There used to be problems when the chip was new due to lacking officially released firmware but I've not had issues with the last few updates

I was about to link you to your own topic on the panic. In which case, yes running concurrent network management daemons has by definition undefined behaviour, and is simply something you should not be doing. If that issue is fixed by that, though it's unfortunate and likely bug report worthy that this lead to a panic, the network instability was entirely self inflicted and expected in that case.

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

This is my NIC.

6b:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)

Please check these ones which are related because I was given some indication on IRC that this was a known bug with the kernel...

error messages...
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1865755

more information...
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=249458

I am going through these threads again now though, I have tried dropping NM for systemd-networkd as-well and I had the same kernel panic behaviour happening...

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

I have the same NIC and no issues...

FWIW why do you not ask the person claiming that on IRC to provide a backup towards that claim?  If they can make such a claim they should also be able to post relevant bug reports.

What kind of network configurations (band, ip4, ip6, WPA etc are you connecting to?)

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

Okay sorry for all of these threads, I will be keeping it all in here from now on... I did not realise that the problem was not actually fixed because I was told that this was a problem with the kernel...

Here's an output of journalctl displaying the before previous boot which ended with a kernel panic because I had the ethernet connected: http://ix.io/1XoU

And this one is of a successful boot using the lts kernel instead: http://ix.io/1XoV

Somebody please help me to fix this...

Thank you.

And this is a kernel panic not from using the USB wired ethernet emuator but the wifi connection being attempted to be made: http://ix.io/1XoX

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

I'd suggest to first drop NM (stop and disable the service) and try to connect w/ wifi-menu.
If this is more reliable, you could try to change the dhcp client in NM: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … HCP_client
But because of the original problem my guess is that NMs multi-access on the chip (frequent scanning to drain your battery…) is the ongoing cause.

I will try these suggestions now from the previous thread.

Re: [SOLVED] Known bugs about Atheros NICs and kernel?

You are using the WireGuard kernel modules. Those are known to cause kernel panics with 5.3 . This has no relation to your NIC.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63870
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63855

And yes these are indeed not yet fixed.
