I followed the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sm … put_Method wiki page for installing scim and installed the AUR package for scim-anthy. Anthy itself is also installed.
I haven't set up the automatic startup yet, I try to get it started with the command line first.
$ export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM; export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"; export QT_IM_MODULE="scim"; scim
(it's a test, so I don't -d(aemonize) yet, but if I use it, it makes no difference)
When I execute this, a tray icon appears on my i3 bar. I can right click it to open the settings. Anthy (Japanese) is listed there als input method.
When I left click the tray icon, nothing happens. When I press the toggle hotkey (or any other hotkey from the setup screen), nothing happens.
When I change the hotkey in the setup window to for example Super+Control+s, and I try to press this hotkey in LibreOffice Writer, a letter 's' appears, so the hotkey isn't recognized.
Can anyone help me to get this to work?
As a sidenote, but I don't think it is necessary, I have added japanese utf-8 to my locale.conf throught locale-gen.
Extra note: I also saw https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=68306 and it looks like a similar question with no solution.

scim is very old, and it does not work at all with Qt programs. try your luck with fcitx? for japanese there is also fcitx-mozc as alternative to anthy

That's not how it works, those variables have to be set globally for all running programs, you're just setting them for scim itself (scim does not need it to be set for itself; it needs it to be set for other programs)

Thanks, I'll look into that.

Thanks for this as well. You actually help me a lot with this information because I have probably made errors with this before.
It might even solve the issue, but I'll still look into the newer technology.

This was my error indeed. So my question is solved and I will mark it as solved.
