Mail server

I haven't worked with mail servers before so i was wondering how do i setup a smpt mail server to send external mails. I want to use it in a php website(send users notifications and stuff like that). Now i want this server to run independently. All i managed to find out so far is how to set it up to send the mail to another smpt server. I want my own server to do all the work, no external servers(relaying), all has to run from my server.
Anyone knows any servers that do this, link, tutorials?

Re: Mail server

ady, there are some step by step guides on the wiki, and most things you find via google should be reasonably appliccable.
