Any operation involving Pacman packages (removing, upgrading, installing) completes successfully but results in a stream of ldconfig errors at the end, like:
ldconfig: File /usr/lib/xxxxxx.so is empty, not checked. Are these harmless or do they mean something bad? I suspect it has something to do with earlier when my computer hard froze while upgrading and I had to hold the power button and reboot to get it working again.
For example if I try to install guvcview:

Apparently you ignored the big red-shaded box with bold lettering in the wiki:
Warning:
Be careful when enabling the testing repositories. Your system may break after performing an update. Only experienced users who know how to deal with potential system breakage should use it.
If you enable testing, you must also enable community-testing. If you enable any other testing repository listed in the following subsections, you must also enable both testing and community-testing.
I'm not sure if that'd be a direct cause of the current issue, but I suspect it's related.

You're right, lol. I enabled multilib a few months ago to install Wine and I guess I also decided to enable multilib-testing for some reason. My mistake.

Why did you edit your post to put the output on a different file sharing site? The new one you chose is showing a rendered image of the text - and either ridiculously slowly, or incompletely and with no way to see raw text. Please put it back on a site where we can actually get the data.
EDIT: ok there is a "just text" option that now works - it wasn't working for a while. So I've got the log. But that site really sucks.
The log you just posted doesn't show any of the errors you mentioned in the first post.

Sorry, I edited it because the forum rules say to not use pastebin.com. But the reason they're not in the log is probably because they only show up when installing or removing something, and I was already fully updated when I ran pacman -Syu --debug. I also get them when running "ldconfig" by itself.
Offline
Well they all belong to 5 packages: ghostscript, graphviz, gts, netpbm, and vala. Have you tried reinstalling those?

Chances are there's more stuff screwed, check
LC_ALL=C pacman -Qkk | grep -v ', 0 altered files'and in doubt also post your pacman log.
Pastebin is discouraged because it's not accessible for several users, but that's no reason to pick the most retarded service i've seen so far.
See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … in_clients and in doubt just use ix.io

I tried reinstalling Vala and it worked, turns out those are all dependencies of vala. But I had to use --overwrite to take care of conflicting files:

vim-runtime seems to have taken a hit?
Offline
From that output would reinstall as well mercurial pacman-contrib powerline-vim vim-runtime
Offline
That yeilds four more: pacman-contrib, powerline-vim, mercurial, and vim-runtime.
Reinstalling those will patch up the current problems, but you might want to get to the bottom of how this happened in the first place. My first check would be a SMART test on the disk if something doesn't stand out in your memory as a possible cause (e.g., do you get frequent power cuts during pacman updates).

Powerline-vim and vim-runtime are my fault, I uninstalled vim and forgot to also uninstall powerline, of which vim-runtime is a dependency.

A while ago my computer had kept crashing during upgrade but it seems like that issue is resolved now and it hasn't happened for a long time. I did a SMART test though and it looks like everything is ok with my drive:
gt@arch ~ sudo smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdb

How did you uninstall vim that caused the removal of files owned by other packages?
Offline
I deleted them manually afterwards. Now I know that was a dumb idea. lmao

Have a look at Pacman#Removing_packages to remove packages along with their dependencies and Tips_and_tricks#Removing_unused_packages_(orphans) to remove unneeded packages.
