[SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

Hello,
Today I upgrade my system.
After upgrading I am not able to enter password at the login screen.
Sleep, restart and shut down buttons are disabled.
If I type password it's not showing.
After typing correct password and enter it showing black screen.
It comes after upgrading system.

I am using kde plasma.

Please help me sort the issue.

From a chroot, paste your pacman.log and your xorg.log.

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

I am able to press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and login from there.
But I am not able connect to wifi.
So can't paste the log on server.

Also I have snapshots of last system, is there any option to restore them from command line

Are you using sddm and if so, does this apply - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=256507

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

Yup having a mainly same issue, I am using kernel 5.6.
Updated to 5.7 and same issue as described in that post.

I ran time shift and downgrade the system, then problem solved.
Then I upgraded again as I thought it might be my fault, but getting same thing again.

That post is also unsolved.

Edit: I think the issue is with 5.7.
But my graphic card is ATI radeon.

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

If you upgrade to kernel 5.7.3, then you need to go back to kernel 5.7.2 or install kernel 5.7.4 (from testing repo).
Kernel 5.7.3 have serious bug, which causes problems with system timing on some computers (like my Lenovo Z50-75).

New kernel 5.7.4 solves this problem:

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

If the issue is still present under linux 5.7.4 please post Xorg.log and kernel messages with and without the issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

Sorry I restored the old snapshot now and thus not want to again upgrade kernel then get the logs and then downgrade the system back.
But as I saw the logs after update, are similar to this post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=256507.

So if I have to wait till next kernel update or a solution to that problem as might be difficult to come to a conclusion without logs.
I am ok with this kernel till next available update but a good solution is preferable as next kernel updates might have same problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

You can post your kernel messages from 5.7.3 as they will be stored in the journal see Journal#Filtering_output.
Edit:
If you are referring to the i915 issue from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1910576 the dmesg you posted did not show i915 in use.
You have not posted the Xorg.log which would also show what GPU was in use,  nor have you posted the lspci -nkk output which would also show it.

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

below link gives logs till I upgraded system, then downgrade, but I don't think 5.7 version logs are included.
http://ix.io/2pBI

I am using ATI radeon graphic card, so in this respect this post is different.

after applying lspci -nkk, getting flowing results

Re: [SOLVED] Not able to login after upgrade

I have solved the problem.
Thanks to @loqs and many other users in another post of something similar kind.
To mark this post as solved I am giving the solution here too.

Sol: I downloaded the linux-lts kernel as a backup kernel and was able to login from it after upgrade.
Then a new kernel update solves the problem of latest linux kernel and I am able to boot from it too.

There is too much benefit of using two kernels instead of one as if during update the programs have some issue with new kernel then a backup lts kernel can be booted.
