How to best troubleshoot sudden slowdowns/freezes?

I've been googling for a while trying to figure out the source of my T440s (i5-4200u) sudden unrecoverable slowdowns (to which I cannot move the mouse pointer or do anything other than power-cycle), and while CPU power/max_cstate seems to pop up a lot, that issue seems to only be pertinent to older CPUs (Bay Trail), and I've seen *some* consistency among certain resource hogs (browsers, 3d modelers), but I don't have a way to preemptively watch for and log which process might be the culprit, and whether it's the result of high CPU or memory usage.  Does anyone have any advice for troubleshooting these issues?  Both finding the specific problem and measures to prevent it?  Thanks everyone

The best way these forums can help you is if you examine your logs from your Journal and dmesg and post relevant pieces here.
