I'm building a system with an Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi motherboard which uses a realtek RTL8187L chip. This is a USB device. I cannot connect to the wireless network.
I started the card manually, and did an iwconfig, which shows:
wlan0 802.11b/g linked ESSID:"B12345A"
Mode:Managed Channel=11 Access Point: 00:13:49:79:BF:2B

iwlist wlan0 scanning gives:

Cell 01 must be my neighbor's network; Cell 02 is a Zyxel access point I have temporarily set up without any encryption; Cell 03 is my normal access point using wpa-psk. It looks to me like the card in the computer is recognizing the Cell 02 access point, but I cannot ping it.
Not sure why the signal level is at zero; this remains at zero regardless of where I locate the access point.
I did an ifconfig wlan0 192.168.27.4 to give an ip address. It cannot ping anything else on the network, and anything else coming in times out.
I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but can't figure out what it is. What am I missing?

Can we see set up in rc.conf? use pastebin for larger configs
Think you were having problems starting wlan0up from boot I tried rc.local but it would not start here
Maybe need a startup script in rc.d
Would be handy if anyone uses wireless to just say how they start network ...
Wiki is helpful but a little confusing
