[snap] Why isn't it official?

Hi there,

it's just out of curiosity - I didn't find any official stance on the topic or any information why snap isn't in the official repositories. Is there any information I couldn't find?

It's really a non-issue but only curiosity, the only thing I use which isn't in official repos is spotify which I use as flatpak (instead of aur), though, the non-availibility of snap made me curious as many other distributions support it officially.

I don't think it's so much about why they don't care about it, as it is about why they should care about it? smile

Well I can't find any actual statistics for the Snap Store, but the AUR has 72,064 packages. I doubt the Snap Store has that many packages available... So why would a distribution aimed at competent/experienced Linux users need Snaps when we have the AUR.

The usual reply - if no TU/developer is interested in maintaining something, it's not in the repos.

Snap solves a problem that arch doesn't really have. On top of that it's pretty controversial, and the people who use arch aren't really the type to be into snaps.

I think the fact that it causes problems problems that arch doesn't have is also a pretty good reason for it to not be supported.
