0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

Hi everyone,

I have a
0bda:c811 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11ac NIC
usb wifi stick, on KDE it sees all the network, signal strength, etc, but I cannot connect to any network, it's stuck at "Configuring network interface"

the installed driver is the rtl8821cu-morrownr-dkms-git from AUR. Is this a driver issue or something else?
Thank you.

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

Thank you, unfortunately it's not working (disabled networkmanager, rebooted)

WPA association/authentication failed for interface 'wlp2s0f0u7'

since the wifi password entered is correctly, can I assume that this is a driver (or maybe a hardware) issue or may be something else?
Edit: hw issue with the usb wifi ruled out, just tried it in another os that shall not be named and it's working perfectly fine.

Unfortunately it's never that simple... it was a different machine where I have tried the adapter.

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

I had a bit of time to play around, a new kernel update after, but still doesn't work. Tried the projector with the simple 12345678 password (the profile was set up with wifi-menu, scan, etc is working), the same issue there ... overall, I guess it is not a NetworkManager fault, but something else...

Btw, I also get this error when starting the network scan.

Overall, is this most likely a driver issue? If so, I will try to report it upstream (I am using the rtl8821cu-morrownr-dkms-git package).
Thank you.

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

Do you get more error details in the netctl status?
If not, what if you try to associate manually? https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wpa_supplicant
You could also try to use iwd isntead, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd

In any event, please post the scan results - this might be some weirdness in th AP configuration.

If you monitor "ip a", can you bring the NIC up at all?

'key.
So you get rejected w/o a return code.
How many are "any network"? Is it possible that you configured a MAC filter on the AP?

I don't think I was ever that drunk smile I have two networks + the projector creates it's own + I have an old spare wifi router, which I haven't tried yet, but I just had an idea, I will set that up as an open network and test it.

Other idea: I have set my main network to open, it does not work. I am still getting " WPA association/authentication failed for interface 'wlp2s0f0u8'" but "Security=none" in the config file (I have erased and recreated the file with wifi-menu, does it
take the config file from somewhere other then /etc/netctl ?).

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

There's no wpa_supplicant call in the journal, so this might be a clumsy status token.
You can test https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … cess_point

Other than that you could try whether "wpa_supplicant -dd" produces more relevant information and a completely different cause might be https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … utosuspend

Strangely the scan does not work, although the led blinks on the device, but instantly gives an aborted.

So back to password. The router it come set up as Auth mode: "WPA/WPA2 PresharedKey", Encryption Mode: "TKIP/AES". However I don't think this might be a problem since some cheap 0.60 with shipping chinese wifi adapters are working out of the box.

Here is the -dd log with password: https://pastebin.com/Km6FCcfn
The wpa_cli steps ware the same as posted above (scan, connect)

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

signal: -75 dBm

Can you get closer to the AP and try again?

Re: 0bda:c811 Realtek USB wifi unable to connect to any network

Had this issue today, fixed it with:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/8821cu.conf    (remove conflicting file)
yay 8821cu   (install option 1)
sudo modprobe 8821cu    (load driver)

This thread is > 3 years old…
There's no 8821cu package, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?K=8821cu
rtw88_8821cu is meanwhile(?) in the kernel but you probably installed https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rtl8821cu-dkms-git ?
