[SOLVED] After update: xorg enters crash-start-loop

I updated my backup laptop (and old Thinkpad x201), for the first time in a few months (maybe since last summer, 2021), after which xorg/x11 crashes as soon as it launches my window manager, StumpWM. I assumed it was the WM's fault, but I tried using fluxbox instead, but this also crashes as soon as it starts, and tries to re-start it 10 times, before going black-screen (on tty1).

I don't use any Desktop Environment, or login manager, my setup is: it automatically loggs me in on tty1 and startx launches the WM specified in .xinitrc automatically.

There is no log in /var/log/ from the startup session, and the error message when x11 crashes disappears so fast, I don't have time to read it.

Logging into tty3, I've piped the log from journalctl

This is where I login, it seems to complain about not finding "dmidecode", which apparently is an optional dependency, (it might mean nothing).

Here I think is when it starts looping, it says something about "Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.home1.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.home1.service not found." but might mean nothing.

For rootless xorg, the log is in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.log

Re: [SOLVED] After update: xorg enters crash-start-loop

Thanks for pointing it out! I've atach the log below, I note several lines "UnloadModule: "libinput"" before the server shutdown. I wonder if that's a clue to why my xorg crashes? (Searching I found something about a bug in 2018, which clearly can't be the case for me, since it worked a few months ago)

Re: [SOLVED] After update: xorg enters crash-start-loop

That server ran for ½s and then terminated cleanly - it's the session process that crashes.
I guess that stumpwm? Make an xterm the session process and fork stumpwm ahead. Then try to run it from the xterm and watch out for errors.

Not System Administration; Moving to "Applications & Desktop Environments"

Re: [SOLVED] After update: xorg enters crash-start-loop

Marking this as solved, as I think it is indeed an error in my StumpWM config, and an unrelated error in my fluxbox config, causing both to crash.

I removed the auto-start and auto-login to tty, and have debuged the issue, as described on the wiki, thanks to above participants for suggestions and help to debug this issue.
