Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

My Star Labs Starlite with fully updated Arch, kernel 5.18.9 won't shutdown.  Messages show it proceeds all the way to the last step, and the screen goes blank, machine not responsive, but not actually off.  Have to hold the power button for 10 sec to force shutoff.  Downgrade kernel to 5.18.8, problem persists.  Downgrade to 5.18.7, problem solved.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

Please post the system journal for a shutdown with and without the issue.
Have you tried changing the reboot kernel parameter?

        reboot=         [KNL]
                        Format (x86 or x86_64):
                                [w[arm] | c[old] | h[ard] | s[oft] | g[pio]] | d[efault] \
                                [[,]s[mp]#### \
                                [[,]b[ios] | a[cpi] | k[bd] | t[riple] | e[fi] | p[ci]] \
                                [[,]f[orce]
Where reboot_mode is one of warm (soft) or cold (hard) or gpio
(prefix with 'panic_' to set mode for panic
                                        reboot only),
reboot_type is one of bios, acpi, kbd, triple, efi, or pci,
reboot_force is either force or not specified,
reboot_cpu is s[mp]#### with #### being the processor
                                        to be used for rebooting.

You could also try linux 5.19-rc5 to see if the issue has already been fixed upstream.  If that fails you could bisect between the two stable releases to find the cause.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

I have not tried changing the kernel parameters.  I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary.  The end of the shutdown logs are below.  July 6 fails, July 7 succeeds.  Definitely some differences, but hard to see why one fails and not the other.  Not sure if this will help you, but thanks for the advice.

Also tried 5.18.10 from testing, problem still exists.  Will stay on 5.18.7 for now, hopefully solution appears.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

Please edit you post and use code tags, https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

I have not tried changing the kernel parameters.  I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary.

"Hope is not a strategy."

Will stay on 5.18.7 for now, hopefully solution appears.

You mean, like "magically"?

The system shuts down fine, it just doesn't power off.
The difference is more likely towards the beginning of the journal, where the ACPI messages are.

And don't copy and paste out of the pager when posting the journal or excerpts.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

Does this kernel which is the midpoint between 5.18.7 and 5.18.8 have the issue?

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

The midpoint kernel works as expected, machine shuts down and powers off nicely.

Tried passing the acpi = force kernel parameter to the new kernel, but no use, problem still persists.

Also, interestingly, I can do a reboot with the new kernel just fine, just not a shutdown.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

With linux-5.18.7.r118.gd95ac8b920de-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst, I cannot power off.  The problem is somewhere between r91 and r118.

Also, not sure if this is relevant, but the machine is using the open source coreboot firmware. But works fine with 5.18.7.r91.

Both of these fail.  Cannot power off with either.  Not sure if this good news or bad?

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

I was hoping linux-5.18.7.r114.g0e72cea60cb8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst would be good as that would mean the cause is 9245c6c1f0095d1e9d7862253680cb1e53e65e76 xhci: turn off port power in shutdown,  which seems plausible.
Anyway back to an earlier commit

seth spot any possible candidates in https://github.com/archlinux/linux/comp … 7aeef48044 ?

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

Good news.  r102 works.  And, after your comment I went back to double check r114 and r115, and I spoke to quickly!  r114 does in fact work, while 115 does not.  I guess in testing them back to back I must have missed an install and shutdown and restart and shutdown again to test.  My mistake.  I think that you indeed found the commit at fault.  Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the screw up.

$ git bisect good
9245c6c1f0095d1e9d7862253680cb1e53e65e76 is the first bad commit
commit 9245c6c1f0095d1e9d7862253680cb1e53e65e76
Author: Mathias Nyman <mathias.nyman@linux.intel.com>
Date: Thu Jun 23 14:19:43 2022 +0300

xhci: turn off port power in shutdown

    commit 83810f84ecf11dfc5a9414a8b762c3501b328185 upstream.

If ports are not turned off in shutdown then runtime suspended
self-powered USB devices may survive in U3 link state over S5.

During subsequent boot, if firmware sends an IPC command to program
the port in DISCONNECT state, it will time out, causing significant
    delay in the boot time.

Turning off roothub port power is also recommended in xhci
specification 4.19.4 "Port Power" in the additional note.

Awesome.  I can confirm that 5.18.10 with 9245c6c1f0095d1e9d7862253680cb1e53e65e76 reverted works as expected.  Thanks very much!

Please open a bug report on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/ Product drivers Component USB add Mathias Nyman <mathias.nyman@linux.intel.com> to the subscribers list.
Include the bisection results and all kernel messages from a boot with the issue.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

I'm experiencing the same issue on my Xiaomi mi notebook air (2016 13.3" model).
Thank you @dr.dynamics for the bug report and thank you @loqs for the kernel. I can confirm that this kernel does work for me as well.
@dr.dynamics did you perhaps find a workaround for this issue?

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

The commit is due to be reverted [1],  it will take some time to make its way through various trees until the revert arrives in a stable release.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

I would suggest not using latest 'stable' version and using LTS intead unless you have a specific reason not to.

Good to hear that! Thanks for letting us know.

Unfortunately, this commit made it into linux-lts-5.15.51 sad

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

@terry798 Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. Was starting to wonder if it was just my machine somehow.  No proper workaround; either block upgrade of 'linux' in the pacman.conf, and use the old kernel from @loqs, or just use 'sleep' a lot more and hard reset to power off when really necessary.

Re: Laptop won't shutdown with kernel 5.18.8, 5.18.9

You can build an updated kernel with the commit reverted:
Arch_Build_System#Using_git_directly

git clone https://github.com/archlinux/svntogit-packages.git --single-branch --branch 'packages/linux' linux
cd linux/trunk/

Edit the PKGBUILD and on line 42 add

  git revert -n 9245c6c1f0095d1e9d7862253680cb1e53e65e76

then build the package.

makepkg -rsi

Edit2:
Queued for 5.19.8 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … 18b54f7001
