Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

I'm currently using Pulseaudio and also have pulseaudio-alsa installed. My problem is that everything is working properly (Soundcard is detected, Headphones are detected, pavucontrol shows that there's sound supposed to be playing), but no actual sound is coming out of my headphones. The audio was working a few days ago before the kernel update yesterday. All the channels are unmuted in alsamixer, and I can also see that they're unmuted in pavucontrol, pavucontrol even shows that there's sound playing when I play a video, however no sound is actually coming out of my headphones, which is set as my main (and only) output device.

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Ah fuck sorry should be

pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

otherwise we get the same full dump thrice, you aren't attempting to play back anything, post that during actual playback, also the sink is configured for like 45% volume try upping that a bit. Maybe post

amixer -c0

as well. Do you potentially have a seperate mute button on the headset/does the headset work on other systems?

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Alright, I have no idea why but after a reboot (Even though I did reboot multiple times earlier and it didn't change anything), it's suddenly working

I do have a feeling it's going to stop working again though so here's the outputs anyways, though since it's currently working I'm not sure it'll prove really useful.

Also I don't have a mute button on the headphones but I wish it was that haha, but then it wouldn't make sense because the headphones work on windows.

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

I am experiencing the same issue. Rebooting seems to fix the issue, at least temporarily.
I have 3 outputs: speakers, headphones and an HDMI output. When the issue appears, the only working output is the HDMI.

Since a kernel update has been mentioned in the first post, I can say that so far I have encountered the issue using the LTS kernel. I have just switched on the stable kernel to see if the issue appears again.

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Something similar to this was reported here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=281830 with a few potential culprits try downgrading to a lower kernel version (... so 6.0.10 or 5.15.80 on LTS)

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

In my case, audio works with both 6.0.11 and 6.0.12. The issue only appears when using the LTS kernel.

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

@loqs: Thanks!

The kernel  with b2ddd76237121155dcadfc4ae77ca1775dfc99f7 reverted (the first one you posted) has no issues on my laptop.
It would be great if @laripo can also test and confirm.

EDIT: I am not 100% sure if the sound problem always appeared at boot. I may update my feedback after some more testing.

@loqs. Thank you so much!

I can confirm that:
1. With the 6.x kernels everything works. (Both with the stock 6.0.12, and with the version you posted)
2. With the 5.15.81-1 kernel (the first link you posted), everything works.

I'm using a 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 on a ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6. (Can post more info, logs, etc. Just let me know what's helpful)

Thanks again for compiling the kernel, and posting the binaries.

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Upstream is aware of the issue  https://lore.kernel.org/all/dc65501c-c2 … irrus.com/
There are two proposed fixes:
Firstly revert b2ddd76237121155dcadfc4ae77ca1775dfc99f7 which is linux-5.15.81-1.1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst from above
Secondly cherry-pick 636110411ca726f19ef8e87b0be51bb9a4cdef06 which needs at least e8444560b4d9302a511f0996f4cfdf85b628f4ca and is below
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Uxvs0z … share_link linux-5.15.81-1.2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uH_E_T … share_link linux-headers-5.15.81-1.2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Thank you so much! If upstream is aware, then hopefully it should get sorted by the next release. It's serious enough to affect many users, and is critical to many users.

Thanks again!!

Re: Sound output detected and working but no actual sound coming through

Hi gi1242, I am just wondering if this issue still persists for your hardware on the latest lts kernel 5.15.86? Because it still persists on my laptop, and if it is fixed on your hardware, I might have to file another bug report specifically for mine...

EDIT: the thread I had posted on this issue:

https://lore.kernel.org/all/d2debc58-92 … intel.com/ waiting for someone to submit patches.
I would register the issue with regzbot https://gitlab.com/knurd42/regzbot/-/bl … regression

Hi stev3w19. The issue is still there on my laptop! I check it with every new LTS kernel release. If it's useful I can post a note here saying the issue is still there...

I just upgraded to the non-lts kernel on my laptop for everyday use. I'll go back to an LTS as soon as the sound issue is resolved...
