[RESOLVED] Display not working properly when connected via DVI

I had an issue yesterday where the screen went blank during an update. I turned off the computer and back on again. The only entry shown in systemd-boot was to load the motherboard firmware. I inserted a flash drive with arch installation. Selected to boot it. No display shown. Switching from a dvi cable to hdmi resolved the display problem. I then chrooted into my installation and reinstalled [linux, linux-headers]. Rebooted and all seemed well. However, using my monitor with DVI still does not work right. It works until the gnome display manager loads. It seems like HDMI is somehow a primary output. If I connect HDMI, fully boot into gnome, add DVI, and then remove HDMI... I have DVI as my primary desktop - until I reboot.

Any ideas?

That's not 'a' broken package, that's a whole lot of broken packages.

Your link is for a different error. You likely need to reinstall all packages. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman … l_packages

The question is, why? Is your drive dying? Power loss, hard shutdown at some point? EDIT: oops, didn't read the first post, yeah, you have filesystem corruption because of that unclean shutdown.

Thank you. Reinstalling all packages, using the overwrite option, resolved all package issues.

All that is left is to resolve the monitor not using DVI issue.

Thank you for the hint. All is resolved now. I am stumped as to why I even needed to do this in the first place, but glad for a resolution.

The following worked.

$ sudo cp ~/.config/monitors.xml /var/lib/gdm/.config/

I did have success with the following:

$ sudo systemctl edit gdm.service --drop-in=override
[Service]
ExecStartPre=su /bin/cp /home/user/.config/monitors.xml /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml

Things needed superuser privileges.
