No audio on fresh install

I just installed arch and don't have audio with pulseaudio on jack connectors (I don't have speakers in my monitor, so can't check if it works on hdmi). I made sure all the channels are unmuted and added user to audio group.

I run these commands while playing a video in Firefox:

Re: No audio on fresh install

Post output of 'lspci -k'. You don't have audio from beginning of system boot or you loose it later? Does it happen in every boot?

There should be no need to add user to audio group. How did you checked if sound is not muted? You can check it also in alsamixer (press F3 - F6 for other cards and inputs/outputs), pulsemixer and pavucontrol.

Re: No audio on fresh install

There is no audio from the beginning and on every boot. I checked all the cards in alsamixer as well as pavucontrol. After posting here I tried disabling the unused cards (enable kernel module parameter for snd_hda_intel), leaving only card 2. I also tried setting different values of ac97_quirk parameter, as suggested in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Advanc … PC_speaker. Neither helped. I also found this thread: https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/ … 837.0.html, the author had no audio with the same card and finally got it working, unfortunately he only said it was a permission issue without elaborating any further, so it wasn't helpful.

Re: No audio on fresh install

For me it looks like you have to change default sound card from nvidia's card0 to card1 or card2 (as it display aplay -lL on end).
Try to play something by this command:

aplay -D sysdefault path/to/music.wav/mp3/m4a

If you hear something, even noise, you will know you have to switch output to other card.
You may try also: default, pulse, speex (-c 1), upmix, front, etc., for example:

aplay -c 2 -D surround71 -f S16_LE some_music

and others similar.

Re: No audio on fresh install

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with either of these options. With sysdefault everything looks like it's working, no errors from aplay and pavucontrol shows it's playing on the correct card, there's just no sound.

Re: No audio on fresh install

Add to kernel boot options: 'snd_hda_intel index=1' or 2
How to do that depends from your boot loader: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters
Someone had similar problem: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=268397 https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=252365

Re: No audio on fresh install

If I understand this solution correctly, I should set index=0,1,2 (or 1, 2, 3, whatever), as there are three audio cards. If I am correct, than this unfortunately didn't work either (I also tried enable=0,0,1 index=-1,-1,0). One more output that might be useful, module parameter values for snd_hda_intel:

$ systool -vm snd_hda_intel

Module = "snd_hda_intel"

  Attributes:
    coresize            = "65536"
    initsize            = "0"
    initstate           = "live"
    refcnt              = "3"
    srcversion          = "3D352566FECD98F86225DAF"
    taint               = ""
    uevent              = <store method only>

  Parameters:

Re: No audio on fresh install

According to output of command 'pacmd list-cards' you have 3 cards with indexes 0 to 2 (with 0 is nvidia which don't play).
The point was to set it as kernel boot parameter, for example 'snd_hda_intel index=1' and reboot the system to see if that work.
You may also write "options snd_hda_intel index=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/default.conf file for permanent change and reboot and see.

Re: No audio on fresh install

@xerxes_ That can't and won't fix anything. The index number matters very little when pulseaudio is involved

There's a headphone channel that's muted, maybe your jack sensing is off.

Can you configure

pacmd set-sink-port alsa_output.pci-0000_0d_00.6.analog-stereo  analog-output-headphones
amixer -c2 set 'Headphone',0 100% 100%

Unfortunately that doesn't work either. Also, jack sensing seems fine, because pavucontrol correctly shows which jacks have speakers/headphones plugged in.
