No audio after reboot.

i am going insane.
this happens on occasion, usually after some weeks of usage. the only solution is to reinstall the system, and i think everyone agrees this is absolutely not an acceptable solution.
i even tried archinstall but surely enough, after some time, it happens again. i log in one day and no audio works.

pulseaudio and alsa (what i've always used) are up to date. i think everything is in place.

>>~ pacman -Q | grep pulse
libpulse 17.0-3
pulseaudio 17.0-3
pulseaudio-alsa 1:1.2.7.1-2

>>~ pacman -Q | grep alsa
alsa-card-profiles 1:1.0.7-2
alsa-lib 1.2.11-1
alsa-plugins 1:1.2.7.1-2
alsa-topology-conf 1.2.5.1-3
alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.11-1
alsa-utils 1.2.11-1
pulseaudio-alsa 1:1.2.7.1-2
zita-alsa-pcmi 0.6.1-1

the sink seems to be fine and supposedly working.

the meters in pavucontrol are jumping so i assume audio is flowing.
i mean, everything should be completely unchanged except for the volume since install (when it works), yet it simply outputs no audio.

systemctl services are fine, i think

the only thing that could be wrong is my computer, but i cannot fathom a reason as to why it works absolutely fine and great after a whole new install, and only borks later on with absolutely nothing messing with neither alsa nor pulseaudio besides my i3 keybinds.

# pulse audio volume controls with status refresh
set $refresh_i3status killall -SIGUSR1 i3status
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+w exec "pactl set-sink-volume alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo +1%"
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+s exec "pactl set-sink-volume alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo -1%"
bindsym $mod+Ctrl+d exec "pactl set-sink-mute alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo toggle"

this time i even removed all other possible audio outputs and it still happened.
i have tried other distros (mint, ubuntu and fedora) and back over on windows xp, 7 and 10 it never did this, this only happens on arch, so definitely my fault. but i don't know what i'm doing wrong big_smile big_smile big_smile

i am asking for literaly any reason for this thing to not work the way it does. it has been almost a year since i've had this problem and i don't know what to do or even what to search for.

thank you for reading

Re: No audio after reboot.

While things aren't working, what do you get from

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
amixer -c0
sudo dmesg | grep snd
#With something playing
pactl list sink-inputs

also because it's known to be buggy and routinely breaks the systemd session, try to use something that's not ly. In doubt a startx with a proper xinitrc: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xinit#xinitrc

i've always used lightdm and only this install decided to change it. even back when i just ran xinit after logging in, i still had this problem, so i think it's not the dm?
it also isn't i3wm cause awesomewm, bspwm, cinnamon and xfce also failed me. at this point i'm inclined to call it a broken driver and give up.

Re: No audio after reboot.

I had a similar issue on reboot, but only after rebooting from a dual boot windows system. Do you also boot to windows?
