I tried to switch my default shell to zsh with chsh but when i rebooted and logged in it did not start wdm and instead js remained on the zsh shell

And?
What is wdm? Is that a typo for dwm? How were you starting wdm/dwm/x11 before? If if was launched from your ~/.bash_profile but you are no longer using bash as your login shell, then the problem (and solution) should be obvious.
EDIT: I see there is a wdm in the AUR listed as a replacement of XDM as a display manager. Is that what you're using? How is it configured to start? Via a systemd service?
