swapon problem

# swapon /dev/sda6
swapon: /dev/sda6: not enough memory

This is what happens on one of the servers I work on. I never saw this and didn't find any relevant info.
Can you help?

Re: swapon problem

Perhaps cfdisk gives a logical explanation? Filesystem might not be set to swap somehow or got corrupted.

Re: swapon problem

So, first I created the partition using fdisk, then mkswap /dev/sda6 went without errors. But then I got that problem.

Re: swapon problem

The partition is 1GB and the RAM is 3GB. At the moment I have 200-300MB RAM free. This is why I'm very confused about the situation.

Re: swapon problem

As I understand your situation, sda6 is a swap partition of 1GB.  That is a partition inHDD.

You state that you have 200-300MB of RAM free.

Swapon command will not be able to setaside 1GB of RAM for swap if you are running swap in RAM which would explain the error message.

This seems to be the logical conclusion,

The other possibility is that another swap setup is enabled which does use RAM when you command swapon.  This could be provided by tmpfs or ramfs in the system.
