[Solved] Microstutter with Multimonitor

I'm experiencing periodic microstutter (around 1ms every 5s) when using 2 monitors on Xorg with a AMD GPU. At first I thought it's a vsync issue, so I disabled it and disabled AMD FreeSync on both monitors. This helped a bit. Then I put both monitors at 120hz. This also helped a bit. But the only way to get rid of the microstutter is to turn off one of the monitors.

I have no idea what else could cause the problem.

Most certainly not.

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and the output of "xrandr --verbose"
Then, what kind of session (and more importantly: compositor?) do you run?

Ok, but that's more like a technical detail that's measurable but not an actual problem?
You're loosing 0.016ms per frame to build up to 1ms in 5s. The outputs need to be aligned to sync both, any kind of drift between the physical rate will eventually wrap.

About the mesure itself: 120Hz is a 8.33ms frametime, not 8, so I'm not even sure how accurate that is and whether or not soem rounding errors might also play into this.
119fps is 8.4ms, 117fps is 8.547ms

It's not a technical detail, it's pretty noticable when _everything_ (the whole screen, mouse, etc.) just stops for a brief moment.

Sorry, forgot to mention that in my last reply. I run barebones i3 with xinitrc, with no special options.

Strangely enough, some weeks ago with a 3 monitor setup I didn't experience any problems. The only thing that changed is running 2 instead of 3 monitors.

"Something different" - I didn't say that you're not seeing any problems, just that it's not gonna be a 1ms "lag".
One movie frame has 41.66 ms
One PAL frame 40, NTSC 33.33, the dreaded 48Hz PJ used in the Hobbit 20.83ms, 60Hz has 16.66ms frames, 100Hz has 10ms frames
You're not perceiving 1ms as stalled frame.

The posted video runs at 60fps, not 117 or 119 and it stalls for 6 frames, ie. 100ms which is 10fps cinema from the WW1 era - and way more plausible.
It is also A LOT and hard to explain even if there was a compositor (if the outputs are running at 120Hz, we're talking about one frame stalled for 12 cycles…)

So, first question: the xrandr output suggests the outputs run at 120Hz, why does glxgears run at 60?
Does it claim

Running synchronized to the vertical refresh.  The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

Are you sure there's no compositor (picom) next to i3?

How does glxgears behave for

vblank_mode=0 adaptive_sync=false glxgears

(assuming freesync is still off)

Another thing is the mouse pointer - does it still stall after removing xf86-video-amdgpu?
(It's rendered straight into the framebuffer, a compositor should™ not be able to stall it, nor should™ any vsync issues)

You're also running the outputs in "cinemascope", how does the system behave if you use "xrandr --output … --same-as …" (ie. the monitors show the exact same picture)

Finally: "sudo journalctl -b", does anything amdgpu/drm related show up there? (resets, errors, etc)?
Also check the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … nce_levels and try to force the high performance level or choose something that sounds like a very battery-hungly manual mode.

Ultimately: see what happens if you run the outputs at "only" 60Hz (maybe the crtc is at its limits and w/ 3 outputs you were forced to run at lower frequencies anyway?)

I forgot to configure OBS to record with 120fps. glxgears is running at 120fps with the output you've mentioned: "Running synchronized [...]"

Removed xf86-video-amdgpu and restarted X but the exact same problem persists. glxgears and mouse are still stalling.

Both monitors are connected via DP. I've tried switching one of them to HDMI to eliminate that posibility. Problem persists.

Also tried running 3 monitors again with the same configuration as before: Still stalling.

It's normal that multiscreen crtc requires more power, so test the behavior w/ the maximum performance setting (or at least leave it on auto)

Fwwi, 10-amdgpu.conf must not exist after removing xf86-video-amdgpu

101% positive I'm not running any compositor.

loginctl session-status

picom would likely show up w/ that search, but it doesn't really prove much otherwise.

glxgears itself doesn't notice that it stalls, this is somewhere on the framebuffer.
To be clear, the perceived stall matches what's visible in the video - that's not an (additional) OBS artifact?

Of course i've tested it in both modes. And I think a 7900 GRE should be able to handle 2 screens with the lowest clocks.

And proof of that is running wayland/niri right now, with both screens at 120hz, lowest clocks and 0 stalling.

Ok, so there're frequent 100ms stalls on X11™ regardless of the GPU driver and refresh rates only on multiscreen setups, they affect the cursor device but are not present on wayland™ and it's also not the GPU clock…

1. try a naked X11 session, just xterm and glxgears
2. do you have an alternative set of mouse/keyboard (ideally $5 office supply - $12.25 incl tariffs tongue) and can you remove the usb microphone?
(The theory being that it's actually not the GPU that stalls, by somehing grabbing the server and  that something maybe input related because of the mouse cursor)

Also keep an eye on top/iotop/netstat, though there was just a single event where the input handling was stalled (and only by 23ms)

Disconnected every device and used only a keyboard: Still stalling.

There was https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301798 but that affected older GPUs

The closest I found to the symptoms is https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-drivers … m-p/397933 which was caused by HDCP which, unfortunately, will require a custom kernel to deactivate - https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMDGPU-Li … -Early-WIP

But then: why only on X11 and only w/ multiple outputs?

It was my old pok3r.

And strangely enough, it started under wayland now too. No idea what config I did change, if I changed any...

EDIT: If I disable 1 monitor via wayland, the stalling is gone. So it looks like it's not an Xorg issue.

With what (supposedly maxmimum effort) configuration exactly did/do you still get this?

Ok, it is getting ridiculous now. Tried COSMIC DE for fun, and noticed no stalling. Both monitors turned on, tried different refresh rates, on each monitor different ones. No stalling whatsoever.

Closed COSMIC, started niri: No stalling.

Closed niri started X: Stalling again.

Closed X, started niri: no stalling.

Resp. have you ever tried power_dpm_force_performance_level at "auto" or "high"?
I could imagine that this isn't related to the GPU at all but your CPU RAM or disk IO gets knocked out - other than that we're very close to "god is mocking you"…

I'm setting power_dpm_force_performance_level manually. Don't need the clocks to be at max, when not gaming. Doesn't even matter, what level it's running on, stalling anyway big_smile

I've finally come around to test grml, and there was no stalling with 2 monitors running. So maybe it's a configuration issue? But I wouldn't know where to look, since the only X config I have is the one from before, or rather no config at all.

I don't even think it's related to the display server (directly) - there was some amdgpu bug causing stalls (but > 200ms, leading gnome to crash on startup and also it would not run frequently) and it's not plausible to get a 100ms stall every 5s from some buffer sync shift (ie. the system doesn't properly sync, looses some 0.xms per frame and eventually completely misses a vblank signal) - you'd hang 1 frame (so at 100Hz you'd get a 50fps hiccup every couple of seconds)

The frequency being independent from the refresh rate suggests there's some daemon running that does something™ very costly™ every 5s (where costly is relative, eg. randr polls or xkb configrations *could* cause something like this on X11 w/o much CPU load - doesn't explain wayland, though)

=> Check the active processes, timers, cronjobs. Some desktop indicator wirgets or whatnot. Power management?
Also test the behavior w/ a completely new user w/ empty config (but it might be a system wide service)

Ok, I found it. The culprit is

redshift -l 49.190:15.62 -t 6500k:2500k -m randr

specifically the 'randr' method. If I choose another method, e.g. 'drm' there is not stalling.

This is really strange, since my git blame is telling me I changed the line 2 years ago. And about 1 year ago I switched from nvidia to amd, but there was no stalling.

Thank you seth for all your help, it's really appreciated! Never would have guessed redshift was causing problems.
