Re: [SOLVED] Wayland/X server update problem aftermath

I solved the same problem by doing:

# pacman -Rdd linux-firmware
# pacman -Syu linux-firmware

you can refer to the following website:

Yeah, i realize that. A lot of updates, manual intervention required.

@Scimmia which part you mean its related with news and `manual intervention` ? I didnt see anything different than before. And what is happening with all new updates, changes ? smile

@yue Yeap, that did the trick.

Thank you all. Solved.

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland/X server update problem aftermath

To bypass this problem I just deleted the directories, which maybe I shouldn't have. What package(s) do I need to restore them in such case?

never EVER do THIS ever again!
files and directories managed by a package should only be modified by it (or the package manager for that matter)
pacman keeps track of folders and files of each package - and if something changes because YOU played around in the filesystem this can lead to severe issues all the way to render the system unavailable

While this is correct, let's try to watch our text tones. No need to be this way especially when a lot of people are new here.

Yes, let's be careful. However we can say this nicely.

"Please do not delete things unless you want to experience re-installing your system and possibly questioning your choice on switching to Linux"

I would even add "in the future, if you feel confident that the files in question may not be needed, rename them first, update, and if all goes well, then delete them" Still wouldn't recommend it, but still a nice way of putting it.

Why am I saying all of this? Because I feel in a forum called "Newbie Corner" that some soft skills is very necessary to help others who are new to Linux, and we all don't want them to fall into pitfalls of doing things without knowing what it will do (and be the bane of any desktop admin for having to fix their carelessness.)

Have fun, and as stated, please do not delete files/directories as this can be very detrimental to the functioning of your Arch system.

It's alright! I don't feel offended, and in fact that is a good signal that I really shouldn't be "messing around" with system files like that. I admit that was pretty much an unintelligent move on my side!
Thank you both though, for the willingness to help out @crypteart @dontbejeff

Always a good idea to read the news before upgrading, or at least if you see an issue.

Best tip in the whole thread! Something that each of us should always keep in mind before upgrading, whether we are newbies like me, or intermediate/advanced users.

Thanks for reminding us, lachesis.

the -Rdd Removes the package while ignoring the dependencies, both required by the linux-firmware package, in this case, and requiring the linux-firmware package.

The linux-firmware package is the offending package throwing the error, so by removing it 'surgically' we can reinstall it in place without breaking any of the other packages that are expecting it, or expected by it.

Yes, let's be careful. However we can say this nicely.

Ugh!! Can we not do this please? It's bad enough we have to walk on eggshells with freaking HR at our jobs without having to worry about injuring someone's delicate feelings on our downtime as well. Nothing about what he said was offensive in any way. It was simply a stern and wise warning, and very poignant. We do not need SJWs to be offended on behalf of others who are not. This has become toxic to our society.

@stevenreina: good on you sir.
@cryptearth: great advice, and I appreciated it as well. Cheers!

Re: [SOLVED] Wayland/X server update problem aftermath

There was no problem. But now i have mouse cursor in the form of a crosshair on the black screen. Then the cursor starts blinking state. tty did not open at first, now it opens. gdm cannot be started.

journalctl -u gdm.service -b | tail -50

gdm[992]: Gdm: GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing

I also tried lightdm but it didn't work. I tried to reinstall the packages. I tried that too:

sudo pacman -Syu kwin plasma-workspace
sudo pacman -Rns kwin-x11 plasma-x11-session
sudo systemctl restart gdm

Still same.

Nothing is working.

Read https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855 and then post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
