Kwin_wayland crashing

Greetings. A few days ago, KDE Plasma began crashing. After logging in, the screen goes black and the desktop flashes on screen around 3 times before displaying a solid black screen. Sometimes it begins immediately, other times it takes a few minutes. Firefox crashes with it, but some other programs like dolphin don’t. Using the shortcut to open the terminal works, and I can use it to open firefox and stuff. Checking KSystemLog shows that Kwin_wayland is where the issue lies.

I am using an nvidia RTX 5080 with one monitor and the nvidia-open-dkms drivers.
I have “nvidia_drm.modeset=1” and “nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0” at the end of the “options” line within /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf.
I have downloaded egl-wayland.
I have MODULES=(nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm) in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.
I have “GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm” and “__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia” in /etc/environment.
I have deleted ~/.config/kwinoutputconfig.json.
I’ve added myself to the “render” and “video” groups.
Both

sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/fbdev

return Y.

Re: Kwin_wayland crashing

Checking KSystemLog shows that Kwin_wayland is where the issue lies.

Please don't paraphrase, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57855
Also

ome other programs like dolphin don’t

if you can still see the dolphin window it's unlikely that the compositor has crashed.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Core_d … _core_dump
Also please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Is FF an xwayland client, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waylan … plications ?

Re: Kwin_wayland crashing

kdeconnect and DiscoverNotifier hit the same curb…
Seems triggered by https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xsettingsd - kwin_wayland then whats to read some config and KF6Config crashes - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Debuginfod might hold a better clue about what's wrong (aside that reading a config is input handling and needs to be more robust against bogus stuff, so a KF6Config bug)
But you also want to check what's in those configs - maybe something already looks bogus enough.

Re: Kwin_wayland crashing

OP did you ever fix the issue? I think I'm having one that is very similar.

journal from today:
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Pkmx3kSqsv/

I'm also using KDE and Wayland. If there's any other information that would be helpful please let me know.

Re: Kwin_wayland crashing

Please don't use ubuntu's paste service that requires me to log in w/ my ubuntu account… to access the plain text.
The journal covers multiple boots, but none of them shut down.
Don't reboot w/ the power button, certainly not if only kwin crashes.
In doubt frenetically press ctrl+alt+del or use the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (nb you'll have to explicitly enabled that before any crash)

Re: Kwin_wayland crashing

I apologize, I'll find a better way to post logs and such. I set up the SysRq keymappings so I can use that to restart. I may also create a separate post because I'm feeling less sure that this is the same issue, since OP's things are crashing only a few minutes in, where my system is having issues usually after a couple hours. Thank you for your help.
