hi, i previously posted about this a couple of years ago here, but i return to try and actually solve the issue.
to summarize that post, under X11, i get very noticeable screen tearing. if i turn on Force Full Composition Pipeline as suggested here, the tearing is replaced with very aggressive stutters in framerate. the "solution" at the time was to use Wayland, which granted does work; however, i am returning to X11 because i would like to output to an old television set using another GPU, and doing this comfortably without damaging the set is not feasible under Wayland at this time. so, being able to have clean, performant output on both displays would be nice.
currently using LXQt with KWin. i'm happy to provide versions if they matter, but given that the issue has persisted between then and now, i doubt it. i did do a full system upgrade today.
i'm testing with Sonic Adventure with a variety of mods installed. this game released in 2004. i don't think i should be having these problems on such an old game for any reason (and indeed, this does not happen under wayland).
i find it very hard to believe that nobody else has had this problem with such a widely used card on X11 for so long, but despite that i am struggling to find answers online. any suggestions?
the first thing i can think of is maybe related to what V1del said in the previous topic:
You probably also generally do not want the FullCompositionPipeline (potentially also not triple buffering, but I'd surmise the composition pipeline to be the main factor here) since that will generally lead to fight because you're essentially compositing multiple times (nvidia compositing pipeline + game vsync and/or kwin vsync) , which is likely why you're seeing an artefact in the first place.
i don't want game vsync since that adds a lot of input delay, but if kwin has its own vsync maybe i could turn that off somehow? i tried following this post, no dice

There's no trace of that - do you only face the flicker/stutter problem w/ that setup or in general?
There's a lot of noise from some "ShanWan Hyperkin 4 Port Adapter" input device - can you remove that?
There's then other noise from a "Microsoft X-Box 360 pad 0" - is the shanwan some inofficial xbox controller?
Remove the ForceFullCompositionPipeline config and then let's have a closer look at the output.

i only brought up the television as context for why i'm trying to get X11 working again - if it wasn't for that i'd just use Wayland.
currently it is single monitor because i've ordered the second AMD GPU to output to the TV and it has yet to arrive. i also still need to order an adapter.
i would like to troubleshoot the flickering with the Nvidia GPU because i would like both displays to be pleasantly usable when i do eventually get the TV working. the ONN display is the one i'd like to troubleshoot.
i did say all of this in the OP fwiw, though maybe poorly ![]()

this is my GameCube controller adapter which should have nothing to do with anything. regardless, sure, i've unplugged it.
this is already installed.

starting with SDDM.
compositor is KWin.
the flickering manifests in Sonic Adventure which uses d3d9 under Proton in borderless fullscreen, and KWin definitely sees it as fullscreen. it does not happen in mpv or glxgears.
You've some bogus input device config around somewhere
thank you, i think i've fixed it ![]()
Remove the ForceFullCompositionPipeline config and then let's have a closer look at the output.
after deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf and commenting out the environment variables from the reddit post i linked in OP, then rebooting with no controllers plugged in to my knowledge, then launching Sonic Adventure directly into the hub world (by opening the mod loader with Protontricks and using the Test Spawn feature), here is my Xorg log:

[ 54.061] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): the stuttering is gone, but my display now tears. i already described this behavior in the OP fwiw. this tearing does not happen in mpv and glxgears though, which is weird because it definitely did tear in mpv before.
EDIT: this tearing seems specific to Sonic Adventure unfortunately... i just tried a myriad of other games (Hollow Knight, Silksong, ClusterTruck, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Turok...) and they don't seem to tear at all.
