Slow samba speeds

When I download files from an xp computer to arch using samba, I usually get speeds of ~5.5MB/s

When I upload files to xp from arch, initially the files transfer at 5.5MB/s, but after 10-15 seconds the speed always drops to ~1MB/s.

I am transferring single large files.

Suggestions?
