Ad-hoc wifi with NetworkManager?

This may be a stupid question, but here it comes:

Is there a way to use NetworkManager for configuring a wireless interface in Ad-hoc mode?

I need this because I'm trying to implement a software AP with RaLink RT2561/RT61 on my home router running Gentoo. (I know, what a dumb choice of OS... well, installed it 3 years ago, and don't want to go through the pain of reinstalling). None of the drivers available for RT2561 support Master mode, additionally, bridging the wireless interface produces tons of duplicate frames (probably an upstream kernel issue). So I need a way to conveniently switch network settings (DNS, gateway route and interface settings) on my laptop. NetworkManager looks acceptable, but how do i tell it to set the wireless in Ad-hoc mode?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ad-hoc wifi with NetworkManager?

Right now I'm using the enhanced legacy driver from rt2x00, which is net-wireless/rt61-1.1.0_beta2 in portage.

The ralinktech original driver also works, but the new driver from rt2x00 (from the git repo) was truly a disaster.

However, the ralink adapter is on the gentoo box I use as a router, on my laptop I have an atmel-based PCMCIA card.
