any benefit to compiling packages locally?

Does anyone compile their own packages?  As in, setting CFLAGS in makepkg.conf and building individual packages (like firefox), or their whole system?

Mostly I'm wondering if there's any compelling case for doing so.  Are there any dramatic performance gains to justify the time expenditure?

Yeah not really worht it , the only app i found to benifit is Firefox on arch 64bit but other then that not a great deall off difference. On saying that when Gnome 2.20 comes out i am going to compile the lot with tweaked cflags to see if it improves anything.

The only benefit, excluding the kernel-thingy, is that you can ./configure it differently, so you can get rid of/add some functionality.
For me, CFLAGS changes never helped much and sometimes hurt (oh god, that's so sad wink )
