Does anyone compile their own packages? As in, setting CFLAGS in makepkg.conf and building individual packages (like firefox), or their whole system?
Mostly I'm wondering if there's any compelling case for doing so. Are there any dramatic performance gains to justify the time expenditure?

difference is negligible. search the forums, there are lots of posts about this.

Yeah not really worht it , the only app i found to benifit is Firefox on arch 64bit but other then that not a great deall off difference. On saying that when Gnome 2.20 comes out i am going to compile the lot with tweaked cflags to see if it improves anything.

I have to saw, compiling the kernel with some cflags and a stripping it down has reallly speed up my boot time. 30 seconds to > 12 or so

The only benefit, excluding the kernel-thingy, is that you can ./configure it differently, so you can get rid of/add some functionality.
For me, CFLAGS changes never helped much and sometimes hurt (oh god, that's so sad
)
