slower download speeds from Arch

Hello,

I am getting slower download speeds from Arch Linux than from my other distros. I have googled and applied  the following "fixes" but they don't improve the download speed.

1. I shut off ipv6:

# /etc/modprobe.conf
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

2. I shut off ipv6 in firefox.

3. Here's my /etc/rc.conf:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng iptables dhcpcd network netfs portmap ntp crond alsa gpm kdm cpufreq)

lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0)

4. Here's Arch compared with Zenwalk:

ttl=242 time=40.5 ms

6. I also tried a different browser, and tried stopping iptables.

Can anyone help?

Tests like these can be heavily influenced by the amount of traffic on the internet.

With speedtests on my connection i've gotten differences as big as 20 % between individual tests WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING.

Did you run multiple tests and averaged the results ?
Where the tests with arch / Zenwalk done close in time ?


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Yes, I have run multiple  tests and tested both very close in time. I also tested fedora 7 and slackware. Arch is the only one that tested lower.

same Kernel version? ie 2.6.21.6
same Scheduler? ie CFQ
any additions to /etc/sysctl.conf?

To everyone: Please add any other ideas to narrow this down, every little bit helps make Arch even better.

As part of my evaluation of any distro I have been using Speak Easy Nets' Speed Test <http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/>. I take weekly tests of each distro and record them. It's a flash based test thats is far from accurate.

However, that test gives me this results:
11768kb/s 8126kb/s


You should try out tptest instead ( http://tptest.sf.net )

TPTEST was originally developed by the Swedish ICT-commission (Government stuff), then later by the Foundation for Internet Infrastructure (iis.se), the Swedish Consumer Agency (konsumentverket.se), and the Swedish National Post- and Telecom Agency (pts.se). The latest development has been to separate the platform-independent test method software (the test engine) from the platform-dependent user interface software in order to make it easier for anyone to write a test client or server that uses the TPTEST testing method. The test engine code is to be regarded as a library module and is released under the LGPL license while the reference client/server applications is released under the GPL license.


Wich gives me more accurate numbers:

By using the same test and periodically recording the speed over the last year, I have an averaged set of numbers to compare the speed of distros. The Speak Easy speed test has been the most consistent test I have found. I wasn't looking for accuracy. With these numbers I can tell when there is any fluctuation  from the norm. All the other distros averaged numbers are close to one another except Arch and the following tests seem to agree with my findings.

Anyway TPTEST looks like what I need. Thank You. I'll let you know my results after I study this some more.

Then i would encourage you to try a different NIC. It's probelity
some driver issue as no one else has noticed this problem.

I was just about to ask about kernel modules/drivers. forcedeth is the nic driver, I think. But i have no idea how to correct something that's compiled in. I will stay with what I have for now. until I learn somemore. I like Arch Linux and plan to stay with it.

If it doesn't occur with the other three distros I have installed, using the same hardware, then it has to be My  Arch configuration. No? Remember, this is a new install, and I'm using the default kernel26.img.

testing troughput over the internet is a HORRIBLE way to compare any distribution. There are so many factors...so many...that could be coming into play.

checksum offloading, tcp window scale problems with upstream routers, network congestion, packet loss, latency, tcp backoff algorithm choice, popularity of the site you are going to, time of day for overall network traffic, what color your pants are...

The best way to test throughput is probably going to be the use of iperf over a local lan connection to a machine that does not change across tests.

However, if you do some traffic analysis, you *might* find some sort of anomaly....

The best way to test throughput is probably going to be the use of iperf over a local lan connection to a machine that does not change across tests.

However, if you do some traffic analysis, you *might* find some sort of anomaly....

Points taken. But if one out of four distros takes a significantly longer time to download the same large file, from the same address, using the same hardware, at about the same time, then what. I am curious. This is how I learn.

If you're stuck on it, you could build Arch kernel package with a kernel config from any of those "faster" distros and see whether there's any improvement.

What about your tcp window settings, compared to other distros (wmem_max, rmem_max, tcp_wmem, tcp_rmem, etc.) ? They might play important role, depending on your bandwidth and latency to test server.

"Googling" for solutions, I see many suggestions to "improve" performance. Most over my head. I'm trying to isolate the obvious first. I was hoping someone here could compare a simple timed download of a large file using another distro with Arch using the same file and hardware. This would isolate the problem to my configuration. Here are the /etc/sysctl.conf files:

1. Fedora 7:
