Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

yay \o/
it worked with acpi and apic 'on' with WM preferences.
94525.jpeg

and it worked as a charm smile
- faster than wolvix !
- nice theme (gion - my favorite ! and dedicated murrine)
- anti aliasing is not activated by default ?

I would prefer mplayer and mplayer-plugins instead of vlc but it is just a matter of choice wink

How can I set a azerty keyboard without restarting X ?

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

I tried running Archie (archie-mini-xfce-2007.08-beta.iso) on my laptop and I've run into a problem it seems.  Apparently xorg can't load "i810" driver X server startup.

Here is a copy of Xorg.0.log:

/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so is a symlink to "intel_drv.so" in the same directory.  My card doesn't work with "intel" driver at this stage, by the way, I tried editing xorg.conf to replace "i810" with "intel", but it doesn't help.  Copying the actual i810_drv.so over from my arch install fixes the problem.

thanks for the info. i will take a look (i assume it might be due to the auto-graphics detection, but i want to make sure)

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

well, here's the situation -
Archie uses the xf86-video-intel package which also provide i810_drv as a link to intel_drv (as you've already discovered). we can't install both xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-i810 since they conflict. is there any way you can work with xf86-video-intel package on this machine? maybe tweaking some xorg.conf parameters? on the look of things, i would expect xf86-video-intel to work since it provides the i810_drv...

if nothing will work, i might make some auto-detection for this i810 card in our auto-graphics detection script.

thanks for the debugging wink

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

OK, the bad news is that I can't get the intel driver to work on this laptop - I've removed everything unnecessary from xorg.conf and it still wouldn't run, failing with the same error.

It works fine with vesa driver, although I have to edit xorg.conf manually to change the driver which is autodetected as "i810" - this is the only change to xorg.conf necessary.

I've tried Archie on my dad's laptop, Acer Travelmate with intel graphics card as well - I don't know which chip exactly, sorry, my dad wouldn't let me use his computer for long wink - but I've managed to confirm that the CD boots into XFCE, although it looked like X failed on the first try and then switched to vesa automatically (lots of flickering and some garbled bits of screen before the ultimate success).  I've checked from XFCE and X was using vesa driver even though normally my dad's laptop uses i810 driver.

A reasonable workaround, I guess, would be to somehow tweak the auto-detection scripts for my graphics card so that vesa is selected as fallback or even as the first choice driver if something like fallback option is not possible.

Here, by the way, is the lspci output for my laptop:

Everything else worked great, as far as I could check, I even got my wifi card (atheros based) up and running without problems, which was cool.  The CD boots really fast.

Let me know if I can be of more use - I'm happy to help out (though not over the next couple of days, I'll be traveling until Wednesday or so, but I'll check the forums once I'm back).

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

I tried archie today and experienced that I am able to boot if no HDD is plugin in.
If I plugin my HDD, the boot process hangs while "Initializing the kernel...", namely at the very first step.

How can I access log files or something that I can provide useful information about this?

Further more I expected archie to contain memtest86+. I think this should be added as it's a LiveCD, shouldn't it?

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

about the harddisk/kernel-hang issue - to see more information while booting, edit the grub boot entry and delete all the splash-related parameters. then no splash will start and you might see more info.
and just out of curiosity - does vanilla Arch kernel boots fine on your computer? or does it need to be compiled with/out something? maybe you need to pass some kernel option in the boot command line?

about memtest - i didnt think anyone still uses it :\ i'll add that if thats needed...

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Concerning memtest, I've discovered that it's contained by the archlinux installer. So I am happy with that. <:

Concerning my problem: I've removed everything that could prevent errors from being printed from the kernel line. I actually can say that it hangs while "Scanning ide partitions". Which is not much at all. ):

It just seems to scan endlessly. That's weird because I've just one 80 GB Seagate IDE drive connected to the first IDE controller.

My partition layout looks like this:
/dev/sda1 40GB NTFS volume
/dev/sda2 32MB ext2 /boot
/dev/sda3 1024 MB swap (LUKS encrypted)
/dev/sda4 35GB ext3 / (LUKS encrypted)

As I've experienced something similar with the current archlinux installer, maybe this is worth looking in: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7868

I'll test the vanilla kernel tomorrow.

Same thing here. As I had noticed in an older post... The problem is still there.

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

I made some test with some IDE hard drives. I found out the the problem occurs only with one 40 Gbytes Wester Digital Caviar disk. This is the disk that I have installed Arch that works with no problem. I tried with another one 10 Gbytes Wester Digital Caviar and there was no problem. Archie started normally. I Also tried to Seagate disk in all possibles scenarios. With one disk as slave as master, cable select, with two disk (including the 10 Gbytes WD) an all options for slave master etc. Everything was ok with archie.

Every time I was connecting the 40 Gbytes WD disk archie couldn't pass the Scanning IDE partitions step... I tried every possible way that an IDE disk can be connected. Allone or with another disk.

The disk id is:

Western Digital Caviar
WD400JB-OOENAO

If someone could verify...

I've had problems with ntfs mounts freezing the system both under Arch & FaunOS.  Solved it by installing ntfs-3g and mounting with
mount -t ntfs-3g /ntfspartition /mountpoint

Well, we _know_, now you come to mention it, that it was the ntfs partition that was causing the hang...don't we Ziggy?  Prolly should have mentioned that earlier...

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

For the record, partially failing hard drives can also cause boot freezes, despite the drive appearing to function normally and (some) partitions remaining mountable.
Typically, failure diagnosis is only possible through log file analysis and includes symptoms like:

dma timeout error {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

How can I decompress the archie.sqf file and compress it again? I tried unsquashfs archie.sqf but I got the error
Can't find a SQUASHFS superblock on archie.sqf. Also can you tell me where the scanning for IDE partition script is located?  I had a look under /etc/archie/rc.sysinit but couldn't locate it. What will happen if I remove it?

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

On my (real) machine, the fonts looks really too small, and I'd like alsa-utils in order to configure the mixer.
Also, VLC fails to display many files, but I know that the newest version of the package doesn't have this problem.

Aside from that and the already reported bugs, almost all works wonderfully!

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

Any chance of archie-mini-xfce including a panel icon for xfce-setting-show ?

And on a different subject, shouldn't http://user-contributions.org/archie.html be withdrawn to avoid confusion for potential new Archie users?

Re: Archie 2007.08 Beta Release

sorry for the delay...

1. i doubt the problem is due to ntfs partition since archie boots fine on 2 computers i have with ntfs, so i still need to find a computer where i can reproduce the problem.
2. to uncompress archie.sqf from your Arch system you need squashfs+lzma patched kernel or module. if you want, i can send you our own manual patch which we've created for the kernel so you can compile it yourself. the ide-scanning part is in the initrd.gz part - dtw can provide you with a debugging version of it so you can debug it further.
3. regarding the small fonts issue - im guessing you have non-standard gfx settings or monitor... since on most machines ive tested it worked fine. is there any "tweak" we can arrange to make everyone happy (you included)?
4. alsa-utils will be added to mini-xfce iso. i've overlooked it, sorry.
5. we are including latest vlc from [testing] so i don't know what can be the problem. maybe a missing package or something?
6. regarding xfce-settings-show - i didn't think its needed since in all fairness, users don't use it (or shouldn't anyway, in a normal day-to-day operations) on a daily basis...
7. yes, i agree, the user-contributions page should be removed... I'll try talking to Rasat soon unless he reads this post and acts before i get todo so.

thanks for your comments, and i hope to have more free time to work on the bugs next week.

sorry for the delay...
2. to uncompress archie.sqf from your Arch system you need squashfs+lzma patched kernel or module. if you want, i can send you our own manual patch which we've created for the kernel so you can compile it yourself. the ide-scanning part is in the initrd.gz part - dtw can provide you with a debugging version of it so you can debug it further.

This would be grate. I will try to find another 40 Gbytes IDE disk and see if I can reproduce the problem.
