Weird network behavior

Hey

When trying to connect to some wireless networks, I get this weird behavior:

The networks runs fast, I can surf the web very fast, and can transfer files between
computer on the network fast as well.

When trying to download files using pacman (pacman -S pidgin for ex.)
I am getting very slow transfer rate - about 2 - 3 kbs, and after a while I get

error: error downloading 'pidgin-2.1.1-1.pkg.tar.gz': Connection timed out
warning: failed to retrieve some files from extra

Can someone explain this behavior?

Tnx
Fiod

Re: Weird network behavior

Do you use ftp ?
If so, try http (many arch mirrors support both http and ftp).

And also try ftp with another app, wget or a web browser or whatever.

pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

Re: Weird network behavior

Also check that you are connecting to the closest server that pacman uses.  Check your /etc/pacman.d folder and in there are the files that hold all the mirrors:  current, community, etc.  If you are using the repository on "archlinux" that's why the transfer is so slow.  It's throttled because of all the bandwidth problems it caused.

Re: Weird network behavior

hey

tnx for the reply.

The problem is that everything works perfect on some Wifi networks,
but works weird on others. With no obvious reason..

Pacman is configured OK (using the Israeli mirrors, where I live).

Tnx again

Re: Weird network behavior

Check with the wireless admins.

It could be that they throttle ftp-connections or that they require you to use a proxy for ftp.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
