Good afternoon,
I have just once again installed Arch on my notebook and tried out if it works. At the moment it's rather hard to operate, as the network is not working. Last time having Arch installed, my Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless worked flawlessly, but this time, it's some kind of a hassle.
I installed the system, using the iwl3945 driver but it did not work out, providing me two interfaces (wlan0, wmaster0) but no chance to use them, iwlist wlan0 scan found my wireless network but I was never able to even ping the router, albeit having it configured just like the desktop computer, which uses the same wireless network. I am using the desktop at the moment, so the wireless network is just okay, the wireless card in my notebook as well, Windows has no problem using it. ipw3945d does not work with iwlwifi as well, so I removed it.
pacman -Rd iwlwifi iwlwifi-3945-ucode iwlwifi-4965-ucodeI installed ipw3945 ipw3945-ucode, which work fine with ipw3945d, but after the next reboot, there is no more wireless interface available. So ipw3945 does not seem to be able to detect it.
The situation is very frustating, the one driver providing me a non-working interface, the other works but lacks interfaces to provide. I rebuilt kernel26 using ipw3945, but it did not help - well, it was my last suspect to raise the fail. I would very much appreciate any help on this, it's frustrating not having any network connection at one's disposal - cable is a pain in here.
regards
cg

+1 for the iwl3945
I did a fresh installation last week (using the then-beta ftp-iso) and I thought everything went fine. Then I tried to get wifi access on campus yesterday and no networks were detected (where there are normally 3 or more) and when I got home I found the same results with my own WPA routed network. I just hadn't noticed till now because I've been using my Ethernet cable at home.

I got my problem fixed so far. iwl3945 uses wlan0, ipw3945 uses eth0, so I just changed everything to eth0.
iwl3945 still does not work, the fact does not change.

The new wireless stack somehow needs me to be root for an iwlist $interface scan to return something. It's like one out of ten times that an iwlist $interface scan as an unprivileged user returns any output.
Running mac80211 stack + 1.1.17 iwlwifi here, IPW3945 card. I have no problem connecting though, I have all the settings as a network profile that is launched by rc.conf.

Ah ha, you're absolutely right! Running 'iwlist wlan0 scan' returns No scan results, but if I append sudo it works fine. Would this be driver specific or network related?

It's either the stack or the driver, but I suspect the wireless stack. If i remember correctly the rt2x00 exhibits the same bizarre behaviour.

Yes, i've seen the same happen with rt2x00
