wep key not working in rc.conf

Whenever I restart my computer, I can't connect to my network (and hence the internet)  because, I believe, the wep key isn't set, even though it's in rc.conf.  I have to manually type

iwconfig ath0 essid *SSID* key *CORRECT KEY*

everytime.  I know that the key is correct in both because I copied the key for iwconfig right out of my rc.conf.  I don't know what's wrong.

rc.conf

ath0="ath0 192.168.1.42 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.42 essid '*SSID*' key *CORRECT KEY*"
INTERFACES=(ath0)

I don't think you can set the essid and WEP there. See the wiki for wireless network configuration.
