Well to start off I might as well say that I've checked the documentation and tried what it says there to no avail. And when i get the output of the various commands it asks to check, it looks right.

I know a lot of it says it's off, but what I'm looking for is one command to rule them all.
The soundcard btw is an hda intel card from the ich8 family

See wiki, especially "modinfo".

as i understood it sound drivers were compiled into the kernel automatically?
tried reading through it, tried what you suggested about modinfo. to no avail.

You could start off with telling us if you are, in fact, a member of the audio group? Or, what sound card this is. (lspci | grep Audio). Is this a laptop?

yes, my user is a member of the audio group, but also when in as root it doesn't work. the sound card is intel HDA. Here's the lspci output though:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
and yes, this is a laptop. It's a lenovo 3000 n200 specifically, and it's running kde.

That's really wierd, i've got the same chipset. It seems it's you and miggols99 that are having these problems..
Headphone, PCM and front levels up?
are they unmuted (00 instead of MM in alsamixer).
Have you tried passing an option when loading the modules, like i suggested in that other thread?

yeah, when i read it in the other thread i tried it but without any luck.
and yeah, headphone, pcm and front levels to exactly where you want it to be.
Could it be a kernel issue? I mean it's most likely not a driver issue, could be a kde issue if miggols99 is running kde as well.

Your problem sounds familiar. Looks like something I had to deal with shortly ago.
Take a look at this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38892 I think you will find your answer there.

cheers, I'll have a look, but I must say that, that sounded very jedilike.
anyway, i tried adding those lines both to rc.conf and modprobe.conf.
with modprobe.conf it says "ignoring invalid line starting with option"
and rc.conf went away too fast for me to read.
rc.conf without options line

It does not work in "rc.conf" it has to be in 'modprobe.conf'
If you use rc.conf your get an error, that's what you are seeing.
There are different options I used "toshiba" and it worked for me but if your read in detail the thread you will find there is a site reference there that discusses other options.

yeah i read in depth, knowing that the card is already supported in the alsa package and kernel there is no cause for the patch. I did read the various pages thereby coming up with model=lenovo101e. while I'm not entirely sure that is correct, i've tried rebooting with the other options as well.
but is it to be in a standalone line or is to be an extention of one of the already existing lines?

In my case my /etc/modprobe.conf had:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
so underneath those two lines I added:
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
and that was all, sound works.
Hope this helps.

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
this is mine right now. sound still doesn't work, i just wanted to try and see what would happen if i had it pick it up from the bios. just for the hell of it i'll try adding toshiba instead. see what happens. I'll be damned if it works but hey.
edit: unsurprisingly it didn't work
wait actually reading through the other threads, some people added the model=toshiba line though not having a toshiba computer and had it work. okay, slowly but surely, all logic from this is being removed.

that was my point
It is not about logic, is about chipset compatibility. That's why I said use toshiba. My machine was an Acer but Toshiba works.
Try also Acer, I know of people that got it to work with it.

well i tried all the various chipsets i could think of (and inspired from the alsa page you linked me to via the ubuntu thing.) and here is the pretty
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo-101e
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo-ms7195-dig
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo-nb0763
options snd-hda-intel model=medion
i know a bit of an overkill, i just wanted to see if any of those loaded the sound drivers and then remove them one by one to see which would allow the sound to stay. but alas, i am not so fortunate. No sound is played.

this is getting on my nerves.
