Hi. first of all networking is my weakpoint. I just moved into a new place with a wireless network and am trying to get the whole thing puzzeled out. I think I've got it I jsut need to figure out what my ESSID encryption key is. at first I thought it was the password. but it turns out I need to find out what the key is in hex. I asked my room mate and we tried to figure it out through his computer (since he's the network administrator) and we can't figure out how to acquire this magic number. we've got it set to WPA encryption on a Linksys router. If you need any more info to help me just ask

Can't you log in to the linksys router? There you will see the key in plain text.

so you need to enter your wpa key in hex?
http://www.string-functions.com/string-hex.aspx
does that work?

Install wpa_supplicant and use wpa_passphrase:
$ wpa_passphrase
usage: wpa_passphrase <ssid> [passphrase]

Just connect via wire and get it from the linksys router's web interface.

alright thanks for all of the help, you've all filled in a few peices of the puzzle. still a few more things to work out though.
alright, I'm using the rt61pci driver for my wireless card. and I'm accessing a WPA encrypted wireless network. I do not have the 60+ feet of cable necissary to connect directly. first of all, what's the difference between an ESSID and an SSID. how do I figure out the SSID. the ESSID is DORKUS, I've got the password. all I need is the SSID and I ought to be able to configure my wpa_supplicant.conf. help!!!!!!!:(
