Help run JanusVM on Arch?

I have JanusVM running perfectly fine in my Virtualbox but how do I connect to JanusVM to linux ? Since I can't replicate the \\192.168.10.2\Setup\Run.bat function in linux? Also is there any better functioning alternative to JanusVM, in quality anonymous browsing?

A New Newb to the forums smile . First post YAY!

Re: Help run JanusVM on Arch?

Welcome to the Arch Forums smile

I didn't know of JanusVM before, but from what I've read on there website, it's basically vmware running tor+privoxy, right? You can always setup those yourself, leaving out the vmware thing.
The wiki is your friend here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tor

Re: Help run JanusVM on Arch?

Actually its more complicated than just tor+privoxy, read this http://hackszine.com/blog/archive/2007/ … ously.html read comments wink and if you have more time on your hands heres a better description http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2007/06/05/ … h-janusvm/. Also here is a typical argument that a person believes that Janus is simplistic as Tor+Privoxy in the comments from this site http://themostboringblogintheworld.word … downloads/ . Here are the interesting comments,

In all honesty its better just to run TOR+Privoxy and use the Firefox extension called FoxyProxy. That extension will set up TOR automatically and let you setup filters that FoxyProxy will automatically use TOR on the sites you pick. Or you could use that portable version of Firefox that automatically runs TOR (can't remember the name right now. Anyways, Running VMware and then this psuedo VPN client just eats up system resources and is a PIA to get to work right.

You could look into other privacy apps like JAP (Java Anonymous Proxy) or just use a free proxy.

heres the rebut

therealdonquixote: FoxyProxy is likely open to a number of anonymity compromising attacks like java, javascript, css and other media format side channels. this will expose you if used without all necessary precautions (see or-talk list, it's complicated).

on the other hand, a fully transparent TCP proxy like JanusVM (with Privoxy for scrubbing requests to port 80) defends against all these attacks; myself and the lead developer both use java, javascript and flash while browsing with janusvm.

it does require more resources than a browser and tor/privoxy bundle (though not much, the VM runs fine with 64M of ram), but in some cases it is well worth the overhead.

also, linux users can try kvpnc with the existing janusvm for windows: https://peertech.org/docs/JanusVMLinuxKvpncUserGuide

best regards,

While searching the web *cough the three links cough* cough*  I found two methods of installing JanusVM on Linux, the first is using Qemu

MePerson wrote:

This is my guide to using JanusVM in qemu
First download and extract QEMU for Windows (Google it, first result)
Then copy JanusVM.vmdk to this directory.
Then open Command Prompt, cd to where QEMU is installed, and type:

qemu-img convert JanusVM.vmdk -O qcow2 JanusVM.img

When it is done, then type:

qemu -L . -m 80 -net nic -redir tcp:8118::8118 -boot c -hda JanusVM.img

It should now work. Set your browser's proxy settings to 127.0.0.1 and port 8118.

Second script (launcher script) has not been tested, if it doesn't work, play around with the -net settings.

The second method is using Kvpnc, I won't bother posting this method because
A) this post is getting long as it is, just put the link in Google and use the cache version, since JanusVM took down the site because a lack of funding.
B) I won't bother with Kvpnc method because I don't want anything to do with KDE/KDE components resource hogs.

Third is vpnc, but I have no idea on how it works or functions

Basically I just want to find a way of using JanusVM with Virtualbox. If all and all fails I guess I would have to resort on using the QEMU method and uninstall VirtualBox.
