change open with option

hi guys i am using nautilus and want all my image files(jpg, png, svg, gif, etc) to open with "image viewer" instead of gimp.is there any config file where i can define file types and default openinig program, so that when i double click on file my preferred  program opens it.
i dont want to right click on every file to change its open with option.
and if u know how to do it in nautilus and pcmanfm plz write it as i occasionally use them
thanx in advance.

Re: change open with option

Isn't there any option to right-click the file and say Open With Other Application" or something along those means? (probably not those exact words, as I use Thunar, not Nautilus, but something similar).  Then you can open it with the utility display, which is part of imagemagick (/usr/bin/display).  Or your "image viewer" which I never heard of.  *shrugs*  Typing which imageviewer might tell you where it's located, most likely in /usr/bin/.
Hopefully?
I always have it pick display automatically, and on the command line it'd be display picture.png, etc., etc., in case you haven't heard of it before.
I'm not sure about a config file though.. that would be nice, as it'd be file manager-independent.

Re: change open with option

yes there is option but i am really annoyed with it because i dont wanna search all of the file types explained above and right click on these files to change openning options.its really annoying.
all i want is to change these files options with one command or adding/changing lines to text configuration file(if it exists i really dont know about it) so that next time when i double click it my favourite image viewer display it.
and "image viewer" is "eye of gnome".

Re: change open with option

Mr Green is right - I'm at the Open With tab, and I see 'Select an application to open whatever.png and other files of type "PNG image"'

Re: change open with option

yes, it's totally confusing. i ahve similar issues though i'm not using nautilus. i have this problems with apps like file-roller, catfish and other gtk/(perhaps) gnome applications. i simply cannot chnage the default "open with" actions. i'm also looking for a simple config-file where i can change this stuff without an interface or gui.
for catfish it worked some time after installing thunar and then setting up there the default apps. but after some upgrades this also changed. however, it's not that important so i gave up...

Re: change open with option

The file you will need to edit is:

/home/<your_username>/.local/share/applications/defaults.list

and there's information about mime types that you'll probably want to read first at http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/ … pes-0.html.  To be honest, for a half dozen mime types it's going to be quicker to do the right click -> Properties -> Open With thing in Nautilus.

Re: change open with option

yes its nice for "whatever.png".so what about *.jpg,*.svg,*.gif,etc?.i will have to right click "one by one" on these filetypes to change their default openning program.
and suppose if i want to change default program(from totem to mplayer) to open media files(*.wmv,*.flv,*.wav,*.mp3,etc).again i have to right click on these files "one by one".
is there any less annoying  way to do this?any command like "alwaysopen *.flv,*.wmv,*.mp3 -with mplayer" its just example not an original command.
or
any config file to edit

Thunar is something different.  I don't use Xfce and know nothing about Thunar but a quick internet search found me http://thunar.xfce.org/pwiki/documentation/faq.  It might help though there is a thread in these forums (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=273440) which suggests that tdbtool doesn't exist.  Maybe somebody else here can help with PCMan - the documentation that I can find is sparse, to make an understatement.
