X crashes randomly

I have been getting some unusual X crashes recently.  While using my computer X will simply shutdown, bringing me back to the command line.  I'm not sure what is triggering this.  Here is the error message:

Re: X crashes randomly

Maybe hardware.  That's been my experience when things start crashing randomly.

I know it *is* often hardware, but oddly enough I have had two such random crashes this morning.  I am using the current X server and upgraded the nvidia driver yesterday.  I have not preserved the whole output, but the X-Org log says :

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80baf4e]

Re: X crashes randomly

I also use the nvidia driver, and continue to experience crashes
