I tried plugging it in and my computer goes unresponsive. I can't click anything while it's frozen, but as soon as I disconnect it the computer is happy again. I think this is unlinux-friendly hardware, no? or is it something deeper?

I'm using a linksys wrt54g router right now, and it works without problems. It is actually a _very_ linux-friendly device.
Maybe there is a problem with the dhcp server on the router.
Do you use the stock firmware? Or something like openwrt?
Have you tried connecting your pc to some other network? maybe there is a problem with your networkcard.

wrt54gl, works like a charm with Arch, Ubuntu, Mac and Windows XP.
All my network is configured with statics IP, but the DHCP is enable on the router...
As said before, maybe it's hardware related.

yes I'm using the stock firmware and I've updated it. My computer system is very simple, and I mainly use defaults for things. Could it have something to do with having verizon dsl? or could it be that my modem and this router have the same IP address?
