help with UMTS pcmcia card

Hi!

I've been trying to use my pcmcia Huawei e600 2G/3G card on Arch, unfortunately without success.

So, what I've been doing:
first, I plug in the card and load the modules:

modprobe serial_cs
modprobe usbserial vendor=0×12d1 product=0×1001

Then I use gcom to register on the network
and it registers just fine, giving the signal strength

I use pppd for the connection, and have the settings as shown on the page
http://ergonomica.wordpress.com/category/ubuntu-linux/
(which is documentation for the card I use and the network I want to connect to).
But before doing

pon

, I need to do

mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0

then I do pon, and monitoring what happens with

tail /var/log/messages.log

, I can read the following:

Feb 20 23:00:35 Attila pppd[9331]: Serial connection established.
Feb 20 23:00:35 Attila pppd[9331]: Using interface ppp0
Feb 20 23:00:35 Attila pppd[9331]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyUSB0

I try to ping google

ping www.google.pt

but ping returns that google is an unknown host.

However, when using

pppstats

, I can see that packages are sent and received:

and here is the output of

ifconfig

:

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:78.130.77.115 P-t-P:10.64.64.64 Mask:255.255.255.255

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
          RX bytes:9272 (9.0 Kb) TX bytes:15351 (14.9 Kb)

So, it looks to me that there is indeed communication.
any suggestion?

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

Seems like DNS is your only issue.
Symlink /etc/resolv.conf to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf, done.

I hate sigs. This one only exists to remind myself to get an avatar.

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

Re mknod etc, all you need to do there is load the ppp_generic module, and udev will create the device for you.

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

hi! thanks for the answers.

tomk, loading the ppp_generic module did indeed make useless the mknod command.

byte, symlinking /etc/resolv.conf to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf did not help me, I get exactly the same results.

I need further help

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

somehow wvdial was able to do what ppp couldn't, even though wvdial uses pppd.
probably some mistake in the configuration file.

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

you need a client to dial in, and that's what wvdial is for.

I need real, proper pen and paper for this.

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

pppd is actually a client, so it should suffice, but wvdial is very good in guessing the right configuration needed by a modem

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

Maybe you need to edit a few more things for pppd to connect properly, but for wvdial it's just one file.

Re: help with UMTS pcmcia card

Hello again.

I've been using the card to connect to the internet. Everything works fine, however, sometimes, when I browse the web, my computer freezes.
When this happens, I have no other way to get back working except shutting down the computer pressing the 'power' button. And this isn't a nice thing to do, is it? after doing that, I have the message: '/dev/sda5 not cleanly unmount, check forced', and after the check, I need to make a e2fsck, and there is always something with the inodes I do not understand (which most likely is not nice either).

Anyone knows what happens when the computer freezes?
