lighttpd and permissions.

So I check my error.log and see this...

2008-02-21 02:38:32: (mod_accesslog.c.535) opening access-log failed: Permission denied /var/log/lighttpd/access.log
2008-02-21 02:38:32: (server.c.895) Configuration of plugins failed. Going down.

so I check to see what permissions I have on /var/log/lighttpd and I see this..

[jasin@kermit log]$ ls -al lighttpd
total 48
drwxr-xr-x 2 root users 4096 2008-02-17 00:02 .
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2008-02-21 13:09 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody users 0 2008-02-17 00:02 access-ssl.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 20 2008-02-17 00:02 access-ssl.log.1.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 20 2008-02-10 00:02 access-ssl.log.2.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody users 372 2008-02-21 13:03 access.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 1131 2008-02-17 00:02 access.log.1.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 1360 2008-02-10 00:02 access.log.2.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody users 0 2008-02-17 00:02 error-ssl.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 20 2008-02-17 00:02 error-ssl.log.1.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 20 2008-02-10 00:02 error-ssl.log.2.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody users 1619 2008-02-21 13:03 error.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 698 2008-02-17 00:02 error.log.1.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 lighttpd users 408 2008-02-10 00:02 error.log.2.gz

How should these permissions look for this to work? I have had this working now 3 different occasions and for some reason after an update all hell breaks lose and I am back to square one trying to get lighttpd working again. Someone please shed some light on this issue for me please and also tell me how to keep permissions intact regardless of what update happens. I am sick of fixing permissions...

the way I see it all I need do is change the owner of files owned by nobody to lighttpd and all should be ok?

Re: lighttpd and permissions.

Since it's happened 3 times now, I'd wonder which program's upgrade is causing this.  You might be able to stop it from happening again.  What does
tail -n 20 /var/log/pacman.log

give you?
