Wicd !!!!!

Hi all

i have the following card on my laptop
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

I use wicd to connect to my wired network with success and i try to connect to my wireless network too with no luck.

I tried wep and WPA1/2 but no luck.

It says obtaining ip address but stays there for ever. In console iwconfig says unassiocated in device eth1.

I use ipw3945 but also tried iwlwifi with no luck. I guess there is something wrong with the encryption proccess and the key????

Please help.:(:(

Re: Wicd !!!!!

have you tried using network-manager/autowifi/netcfg2 to see if it works or not?

Re: Wicd !!!!!

have you tried manually connecting the wifi card via cli yet?

ifconfig eth# up
iwconfig eth# essid
dhcpcd eth#

Replace # with the number of your wifi card and issue those commands as root. I use wicd with an ipw3945 card using the ipw3945 driver. Also make sure you are starting the ipw3945 daemon if you are using the ipw3945 driver. Also make sure that wicd is starting after dbus loads in rc.conf.

Also turn off any encryption such as wep and such till you get the card connecting with just the essid. Then work on wep or what ever encryption you use.

Re: Wicd !!!!!

which driver are you using? Also you might try using the built in iwl3945 that comes with the kernel. I never have been able to get encryption to work right with the ipw3945 driver. The kernel has the iwl3945 driver just add it to the modules list remove the ipw3945 daemon and install http://www.archlinux.org/packages/13313/

Re: Wicd !!!!!

You should really try netcfg2. See the announcements-section of this forum or search the wiki - it is far better than any graphical 'network manager' around.

Who are you to decide what is better for his needs, or anyone else's but your own needs? Sure netcfg2 is a nice improvement upon the original wireless manager in arch, but it's not going to be the end-all utility for network configuration for everybody. What if I'm a roamer? I don't really feel like creating a text-based profile file for a network that I might be using for only a half hour and then never use again. Doesn't really seem practical in that sense, does it? On the other hand, having a daemon-based network manager to connect you to one of a few networks you regularly use doesn't seem too great, either. Luckily, people are free to use what they wish to suit their needs as they see fit. For my needs, wicd 'is far better than any text based network manager around.'

Re: Wicd !!!!!

I'm not deciding what he should use, I'm merely telling him to *try* netcfg2:
1. It is far superior because there's no need for workarounds or hacks (replace dhclient with dhcpcd? ifconfig eth0 down before connect? jump around on one leg for thirty seconds?) and it is stable as a rock compared to wicd and (k)networkmanager. These two do not seem to work for everyone and problems seem hard to solve.
2. more people trying netcfg2 with their setup = more input for improvements = faster final status of netcfg2.

I agree that the missing menu to chose wireless networks from is somewhat of a downside to netcfg2, but that will be solved once Iphitus comes around to document the writing of netcfg2-menu. Considering the popularity of netcfg2, it won't take too long.

And anyway, who are you to come in and criticise me for helping out?

Zl.
